Dark, Twisted Thriller with Romance Thrown In

HOLY CRAP! This book is a fast-paced, disturbing thriller with romance mixed in. I was absolutely captivated by page one and could not put it down. I have not read anything from either Dukey or Webster, but I have fallen in love! I cannot believe how much I liked this book; it almost makes me feel like I am slightly psychotic because this book was messed up (but in a good way…kinda).

The writing in this book was addicting and the pacing was absolutely on point. It flowed so seamlessly, which was great since it was written by two authors. I loved that this story was told in both the present and the past. With the past being slowly revealed with flashbacks, it allowed the mystery and tension to grow to epic levels. It also allowed for the mystery to unravel slowly, not allowing readers to know too much so that they are surprised by every twist and turn!

The characters in this book were like onions, slowly being revealed layer by layer as the chapters went on. I was always learning something new, and sometimes disturbing, about what made them tick. I really don’t want to talk too in-depth about them because this is a book that is better to go into blind. Just know that this is a wide cast of characters spanning from a strong-willed female lead, to a brooding, alpha male love interest, to a absolutely psychotic criminal.

I am going to be honest and say that I was not expecting much from the romance in this book, but I was completely wrong! The romance was slow-burning and angsty, but once it began…it was amazing! I LOVED the connection and chemistry between these characters. This book is also very steamy! I would say that it does have more intimate scenes than I normally care for, but I don’t think it took anything away from the plot.

Overall, I would absolutely recommend this book! It was amazing. However, I do not think it is for everyone. Just be aware that it is extremely dark and graphic. There might be content that may make some readers feel uncomfortable, so unless you have read dark, contemporary romance before…this book would be like jumping into the deep end with both feet. It does leave off on a cliff hanger, but the second book releases in November. I will absolutely be picking it up as soon as it releases and devour it.

Fabulous. These two authors nailed it.

I wanted a dark and twisted story and that's exactly what I got. This story captured and consumed me from start to finish. First of, the prologue did what it was supposed to do. Captivate me and that I sure as hell was. From that point on I was intrigued by the present and the flashback timelines which worked together seamlessly. The main focus was of course the present which consisted of Jade working as a detective and her search for her lost sister Macy. The flashbacks showed how Jade and Macy came to be in captivity by the sick and twisted Benny or as he would like to be called Benjamin and what they both were put through during their captivity.

It was such an intense and thrilling roller coaster ride. The back and forth between times really worked for me and only made me look at and sympathize with Jade even more. She will forever be scarred and have a connection with Benny. She was such a strong girl when she was in captivity, doing everything in her power to protect her sister. As an adult she's still strong but still very much affected especially emotionally which she tried to hide. Luckily she found support in her partner Dillon who also had experienced loss. He was the perfect man for her. Not reminding her of Benny at all and he became her safe place. Dillon was Jade's protector and would do anything to get her justice. Their chemistry and connection were blazing hot and really enjoyed their growing friendship which then slowly turned into lovers.

The ending was insane. So freaking awesome. These two authors worked together flawlessly and created a strong and powerful story. The pace was spot on. I can't wait to read the conclusion and hopefully get an even closer look into these layered characters. So interested to see what made Benny be this lunatic and if Jade will get her own HEA. I can't wait!

Stranger Danger in its fullest form!

Jade and her sister are kidnapped and kept away by a mad man named Benny, but you better call him Benjamin if you know what is good for you. The telling of the kidnapping is something that you can see on any news channel. Its terrifying.

Unspeakable torture that is bestowed upon her is drilled into your mind by the detailed description given by the authors. Rape, malnurishment, beatings, striped of clothing, humilation and more. Her cell is dark, dingy and dirty. She is his favorite but kept at a low level so she knows her place. Her sister, seems to have it better than her but do not go by this.

“My dirty little doll.”

I will never look at a porcelain doll the same ever again.

Years go by before Jade is able to escape from this mad man. She might get away but she will always be imprisoned in her mind. Small factors each day will trigger a memory for her and we are given a flashback on the worst events of her life.

As a cop she is drawn to missing persons cases, stops at nothing to resolve them. All the while she is still trying to find clues to save her sister Maci, from Benny. Then it happens.

In the midst of all this we wave goodbye to Bo and say a very sexy hello to Dillon. They are explosive with each other. From the work that they share to the bedroom antics. It oozes off the pages. These two are just extremely right for each other. He makes the darkness less. The nightmares less. The torment less.

“All of your pieces are mine to hold. Each shard is mine to willingly slice myself on. You’re worth the pain. In fact, I want to embrace that pain if it means, even for one second, I can take some of that pain from you.”

The journey to find Benny after getting so close to him, is cranked up high. He is after her now. Her time is marked. No one is safe. No one.

Back to the beginning for the end. Cryptic statement indeed.

The book shows the talent and dark minds of K. Webster & Ker Dukey. Each page delivered the build up to the future happenings that were based on such a deep dark past. When you think that nothing can get worse or an act could not be more heinous, think again. There are many facets and levels to this story and you are so involved that you won’t miss them but in turn there are also twists and turns that you throw you off course.

We thought we saw twists and turns and unimaginable things but Pretty Stolen Dolls is just the start. I know Pretty Lost Dolls will be more and darker.

About the Author
Andrew Weil, M.D., has worked for the National Institute of Mental Health and for fifteen years was a Research Associate in Ethnopharmacology at the Harvard Botanical Museum. He has traveled extensively throughout the world collecting information about the medicinal properties of plants, altered states of consciousness, and healing. From Chapter One:

You have in your hands a tool for changing your life, an Eight-Week Program for improving your health and gaining access to the power of spontaneous healing in your body. I will guide you through this program step by step, explaining the changes I will ask you to make in how you eat, how you exercise, how you breathe, and how you use your mind. I will recommend vitamins, minerals, and herbs you can use to protect your body's healing system, and I will give you ideas about how you can change long-standing patterns of behavior that impair optimal health.

The Eight-Week Program consists of small steps that build on each other until, but the time you complete it, you have laid the foundation for healthy living. You can then decide how much of the program you want to maintain on a permanent basis. I assume that you want to make changes in your life -- otherwise you wouldn't be reading this book. I see my job as pointing you in the right direction. I have no doubt that you can change, because I know from my own experience that people can do so if they really want to.

In moving files recently, I came across a yellowed clipping from The New York Times of August 12, 1971, with the headline: "Meat-Eating 230-Pound Doctor Is Now 175-Pound Vegetarian." The story concerns a twenty-nine-year old physician in rural Virginia who gave up animal foods except for dairy products, with a resultant increase in energy, well-being, and overall health. There is a photograph of the doctor in his kitchen preparing fresh corn. He has a full black beard, is wearing blue jeans and a work shirt, and looks content. Next to the picture is his recipe for a rich corn soup containing milk and butter, and another recipe for a barley-and-vegetable casserole that calls for a quarter-cup of peanut oil. According to the article, the doctor's interest in consciousness led him to experiment with yoga and meditation, and "since yoga calls for a vegetarian diet, he gave up meat 'in order to really do it right.' He has been a vegetarian ever since, to the amazement of his friends, who remember him as a voracious meat eater and a fat person while at Harvard ... In one year on his new diet he has reduced from 230 to 175 pounds. His recurring colds and allergies have vanished..."

My beard is no longer black, and I have not been able to maintain my weight at 175-pounds. I am still mostly vegetarian (I have eaten fish for the past 10 years), though now I don't make rich soups with milk and butter , use oil in such quantities, or ever cook with peanut oil. I think I am wiser with age and in general feel much happier now than I did when I was twenty-nine.

I will try to accomplish three things in the pages that follow. First, I want to try to share with you my vision of the body's healing system and encourage you to rely on it in all matters concerning your health. Second, I want to convince you of the importance of developing a healthy lifestyle and the possibility of doing so quickly and easily. Third, I want to give you very specific suggestions about those aspects of lifestyle I consider most important to health and healing. I know that I cannot motivate you to undertake the Eight-Week Program -- you must do that yourself -- but since you have read this far, I believe you are already interested in moving forward, and I will assume that you now want to know what moving forward entails and how to do it.

Basic guide and many tips to better health- but use with caution

Andrew Weil is a legendary figure in the Health business. He advocates a mix of conventional medicine( for crises) and alternative medicine ( prevention and maintenance). He is a best- selling author and this present work is a revised edition of one of his best known books.

In it he provides an eight- week health plan for optimum health. Each week he gives his recommendations for changing one's self. Diet, exercise, breathing, overall mental and spiritual attitude are the fundamental subjects he deals with.. He provides case - histories which recount the cures of those who took his 'medicine'

Weil recommends a number of changes in Diet which most nutritionists would accept wholeheartedly. He recommends a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, fibre, and fish - derived Omega- three..

Where Weil is controversial is in his wholehearted recommended of various alternative medicines and vitamin supplements. I do not know whether or not he is right in his claims for Gingkao Bilbao,, Milk Thistle( LIver illness) ,Saw Palmetto ( prostate ) but his use of anecdotal rather than statistical evidence is less than wholly convincing.

I found most interesting his emphasis on ' breathing techniques' as basis for improved health. And I will perhaps make efforts at exploring it.

He has special sections for those fifty years old, and for those seventy years old.

On the whole I have a sense that he is sane, balanced and by and large correct in most of his recommendations.

But I think caution is required in undertaking many of the supplements he recommends. Perhaps it is best to read this book, and take whatever practical messages one derives from it, to one 's own personal physician for evaluation.

Solid Revision

I think this is a solid book. It is not about dieting for losing weight, but dieting for healthy living. Change is almost always more difficult than we think it will be, and certainly changing one's dietary habits are among the more difficult habits to change. By breaking down this change into an eight week program, Weil makes the transition from "eating habit A" to "eating habit B" more practical than other eating for healthy living diets I've seen. I have to admit that I found each week turning into 2 or 3 weeks, but that did provide a sound foundation from which to build, and did not force change on me too quickly. I managed to make it through week 8 using the first edition of this book (about 6 months worth of time using my 2-3 week per chapter pace). I definitely felt better than when I began the program.

After going through this book, I stopped paying attention to my diet and just wanted to see what habits would remain. I think about 1/3 of what I learned in Weil's book I still practiced after about a year. I bought the second edition as a reinvestment into the program. It is essentially the same as the first edition, but with updated information (vitamins and such) and also new recipes. I think there are enough changes to warrant purchasing it.

The very begining of healthier, happier living

I really like that this book tells you what TO do instead of what NOT to do.

It doesn't say "don't eat carbs" or "don't eat fat". Instead, it says "eat broccoli", "eat salmon", and "eat soy protein". It doesn't say "do 50 pushups", it says "spend a few minutes walking" and "spend a few minutes observing your breath". It offers a few suggestions that are unconventional ("ignore the news for a few days"), but very helpful. It starts very simple and slow, and it adds a few small steps every week. So it's a very manageable way to build some good habits, particularly if you are starting from the absolute beginning.

I don't know how much science there is behind certain things, especially some of the supplements. Do I really need to eat ginger root every week? I don't eat it regularly now, but it was easy enough to try it once. Dr. Weil uses a lot of anecdotal "evidence" to make his points, but that's OK. It's an easy plan to implement, and if something doesn't work for you, there's nothing saying you have to do it forever. Try it once, and then choose what works for you and what doesn't.

I did lose a substantial amount of weight during my eight weeks, even though this book isn't necessarily intended as a weight loss plan. Whether you are trying to lose weight or not, you will build some very good habits, and you will feel better about yourself right off the bat. If nothing else, it will make you think about how you eat, how you exercise, and how you medicate. I don't view this as a plan to cure disease or even to lose weight, but rather as a foundation for a better everyday lifestyle.

This is a great launching pad to healthier living, especially if you have no idea where to start.

Informative Text Book

This book explains thoroughly a lot of the concepts (physics, technical, statistics...) that are included. It also gives some simplified examples of algorithms to explain concepts better.

A solid text on image processing from a remote sensing perspective

Almost as good as Gonzaez and Woods on explaining digital image processing, this book has the added advantage of showing the relationship between that field and remote sensing. In other words, it shows you how to use the transforms to accomplish goals in the field of remote sensing. Also, it has some really good exercises at the end of each chapter so you can really prove to yourself that you understand what is going on.

I give this book four stars instead of five because there is no real advantage to buying this new book over the previous second edition, although that book is about ten years old. This edition does discuss the more modern sensors, but the calculations and models have not changed. There is no real additional content. In fact this edition and the previous one are almost identical in length. My advice is save yourself some money and get the second edition for less. If you are using it as a professional reference it should serve you well.

Excellent professional reference and teching guide

I regularly teach university courses on remote sensing and supervise students who use remote sensing as a basis for their papers and theses. I find this text an excellent, clear and rich resource. This is a book for people who not only want to learn and understand what remote sensing is, but to actually do serious studies with this type of data. In contrast with other more widely known textbooks such as Lillesand and Kiefer, Schowengerdt goes deep into important technical issues, without excessive verbose. A good investment for the serious student and professional.

Lousy Printing!

Book was so so....content is a bit outdated and the printing was horrible. Many, many of the pages were not cut at the top. For a book this expensive that is criminal!

Charles Fishman is the author of The Wal-Mart Effect, a New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Business Week bestseller, as well as a finalist for the Goldman Sachs-“Financial Times” Business Book of the Year award in 2006. Fishman is a former metro and national reporter for The Washington Post. Since 1996, he has worked for the innovative business magazine Fast Company. He has won numerous awards, including twice winning UCLA’s Gerald Loeb Award for outstanding business writing, the most prestigious award in business journalism. Really see the water around you, where it has been, and where it is going!

We hardly ever think about water -- it's just there. Until it isn't, and then what happens? Author looks at several situations in which water supplies have dwindled and the responses from the public, the politicians, businesses, and other interests. One of my favorite parts of the book discusses how people in rich countries spend huge amounts of money for bottled water that is likely not as pure as their own local tapwater, but you can't beat good marketing! Also, since water can't be created or destroyed and it has been on earth billions of years, every molecule of the purest water you can buy has seen the insides of many a dinosaur before being held up as an icon of purity! I like that the book is different for me, and makes me look at the water everywhere around me in a different way.

Everyone Needs to Read The Big Thirst

Even if you think you are aware of water problems around the world, this book will heighten your awareness of current, multi-faceted problems and potential problems as well as maverick solutions that have enabled desert communities to reduce water consumption while their populations grow. Fishman is well-versed and a compelling story teller, making the Big Thirst an enjoyable, yet disturbing read that will make you think twice before opening your tap.

Everything you never knew or thought about water

I came to The Big Thirst as someone who was already pretty water conscious (some think obsessed), and a definite water conservationist. But, wow, all that I had never thought about water Charles Fishman has contained in this book in a thought provoking, entertaining and instructive way. This is in no diatribe designed to make us feel guilty about our water ignorance (although Fishman does rant on Arlen Specter at one point near the end, and rightfully so), but rather a series of stories crafted to heighten our awareness, in an attempt as the author says "to change our relationship to water".

About the Author
"Teresa M. McDevitt" is a psychologist with specializations in child development and educational psychology. She received a Ph.D. and M.A. in child development from Stanford University's Psychological Studies in Education program, an Ed.S. in educational evaluation from Stanford University and a B.A. in psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Since 1985 she has served the University of Northern Colorado in a variety of capacities--in teaching courses in child and adolescent psychology, human development, educational psychology, program evaluation, and research methods; in advisement of graduate students; in administration and university governance; and in research and grant writing. Her research interests include children's listening and communication skills, families, teacher education, and science education. She has published articles in such journals as "Child Development, Learning and Individual Differences, Child Study Journal, Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, Youth and Society," and "Science Education," among others. She has gained extensive practical experience with children, including raising two children with her husband and working in several capacities with children--as an early childhood teacher of toddlers and preschool children, an early childhood special education teacher, a scout leader, and a volunteer in school and community settings. When she has the chance, Teresa enjoys traveling internationally with her family, and spending time with her children and husband.

"Jeanne Ellis Ormrod" is an educational psychologist and the author of "Educational Psychology: Developing Learners and Human Learning" (now both in their 4th editions) and coauthor of"Practical Research" (soon to be released in its 8th edition), all published by Merrill/Prentice Hall. She received her Ph.D. and M.S. in educational psychology at The Pennsylvania State University and an A.B. in psychology from Brown University; she also earned certification in school psychology through postdoctoral work at Temple University and the University of Colorado, Boulder. She was Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Northern Colorado from 1976 until 1998, when she moved east to return to her native New England. She is now affiliated with the University of New Hampshire, where she teaches courses in educational psychology. She has worked as a middle school geography teacher and school psychologist, and has conducted research in cognition and memory, cognitive development, spelling, and giftedness. When Jeanne is not teaching, writing, reading professional books and journals, or monitoring the diverse activities of her three grown children, she enjoys-boating, playing racquetball, and walking on the beach with her husband.

child development and education book review

I was happy with the book. It arrived quickly and in great condition. My only issue is that it did not have the 3 CD's that come with new edition. I emailed customer service with my complaint and they sent me another book, but still without the CD's. After some investigation they figured out that the book they are advertising does not come with the CD's. I was dissappointed :(

Good textbook overall

As with many of my books, I bought this one because of a class I was taking in college. I have had a lot of textbooks over my three years in school, and this one was about average. There were a lot of very colorful pictures which make large reading easier for me, as well as a series of personal stories which made the overall premise more interesting. There were a lot of sidebar notes that I tended to find rather distracting and time consuming to review, and this tended to be a little bit of a downside for me. While the overall idea of the book was good it did spend a large amount of time discussing minute details regarding paperwork that is typically used within the special education field, including things such as the standard IEP. I acknowledge that all of this information is very important but it did get tedious to read the same information again and again. It wasn't my favorite book out of all the ones I've had, but the writing is very clear. Overall I think it was a good book, but if you are a broke college student like me I never really used it in the class and probably wouldn't purchase it again, but that is going to vary depending on who your professor is and what school you go to. However for a college textbook I did find it to be rather cheap and therefore a good deal so if you need the book I would recommend you get it from here.

A great IP text book

I got the first edition of this book because it was the required text for a course I took in UC Berkeley a number of years ago. I have been practicing IP law for about 10 years and I still use it as a quick reference (I also obtained the 2nd Edition). In my opinion this is a very well done book and an useful tool for someone who wants to have the overall picture of a complex issue.

Primer, No Less

A waste of paper is rather harsh. Yes, this book is not for the paralegal, but I found that it was a great primer for those that may be interested in some of the operation of law -- exactly who I am. I have no real desire to be a paralegal or more, nor do I want to study law in school, but this book is great in that I am presented with basic information in readable form, with no background in law. I give this four stars because it seems to advertise highly technical information, when it really isn't.

A Very Good Text for Paralegal Advanced IP Students

I was assigned this text in my Advanced Intellectual Property class. It was extremely interesting, with a huge amount of information. It is one of the few IP textbooks written for paralegals -- most are written for lawyers -- and I learned a tremendous amount.

However, I recommend that paralegals who are completely new to IP law start with Deborah E. Bouchoux's "Intellectual Property" text for paralegals first, because Stim's book is definitely a more advanced text. Had I not read Bouchoux's introductory text first, I would have had a much harder time with Stim's text.

The only reason I gave the book four stars instead of five is because some sections of it need updating, in view of changes in U.S. Patent and Trademark Office forms changes, rules changes, etc.

With regard to the criticism below that the book did not devote enough time to patent law -- the book devotes 95 pages to patent law -- two long chapters, but the bulk of the book was devoted to copyright and trademark law.

There are jobs for trademark paralegals and copyright paralegals, but I would suggest that the author give patent law "equal time" in his next revision of the book.

Despite this one criticism, I found the book very useful.

(3.5) Fascinating book about the myth of Melusine

This book presents itself as a scholarly look at the figure of Melusine, best-known as the mysterious heroine of a medieval French fairy tale, but with ties to major goddesses of the ancient world. The author focuses mainly on Melusine's story as presented in A.S. Byatt's novel _Possession_, but also ties in earlier versions of the tale and other modern novelizations.
Alban's thesis is that Melusine is a survival of the ancient Great Goddess. This book is at its best when comparing Melusine to various ancient goddesses. For example, Alban's comparison of Melusine and Medusa, both snake-ladies whom one could not gaze upon with impunity, is fascinating. Also mentioned is Melusine's similarity to Echidna, who like Melusine was a bearer of strange reptilian children. Alban also studies the figures of Eve, Lilith, Persephone, and many others. It's jaw-dropping, at least to a reader like me who is obsessed with the Melusine story, how many parallels there really are between her tale and the older myths.
The downfall of this book is its unquestioning embrace of the "prehistoric matriarchy" theory. No one really knows whether people in ancient times were peaceful, feminist, "gylanic" tribes worshipping a single Great Mother. The theory has not been disproven; however, it is far from proven. No one really knows. But I think this book would have come across as more scholarly if it had presented the matriarchy ideas as theory and not as fact.
