One of the Best and most Instructive Books Ever Written

I read references to the work of Fustel de Coulanges in the writings of the great and heroic French historian, Marc Bloch, (The Historian's Craft) and was intrigued enough to get and read it. What an eye-opener! It is undoubtedly among the top 10 seminal historical works ever written, in my opinion. Considering the data that Fustel did not have access to, for which some criticize him, makes this achievement even that much more impressive. His thought revealed in his writing is clear, insightful, brilliant.

What you will find in this book is a masterful story of the descent of the many institutions to which we are still heir though the context and specific manifestations have changed. In many cases, we believe things about why this or that custom has always been with us that are wrong, and Fustel sets out the evidence for what is really behind such things as marriage ceremonies, carrying the bride over the threshold, the foundations of the legal system including why it was the eldest son who got everything for thousands of years, and so forth. There are many questions about why things are the way they are answered in this book.

As other reviewers have noted, there are many descriptions in "The Ancient City" that will bring elements of the Bible to mind. The big question nowadays is: did the Bible borrow from other stories and cultures to create a "history of Israel" that never actually happened? Were some of those stories Greek? And were the Greek stories influenced by elements from Anatolia and Mesopotamia, coming to the Bible by a circuitous route? Did the authors of the Septuagint borrow from Homer and Herodotus?

These are all questions that are interesting and can be better formulated by also reading Russel Gmirkin's book: Berossus and Genesis, Manetho and Exodus: Hellenistic Histories and the Date of the Pentateuch (Library Hebrew Bible/Old Testament Studies)and Bruce Louden's book: Homer's Odyssey and the Near East

Despite some of the nit-picking criticisms that have been directed at Fustel over the years, I've never found a significant argument that Fustel got it wrong. His sweeping overview of "how things must have happened" by taking what we know and back-engineering it, is amazing. Everyone should - and can - read it because Fustel was not a stuffy academic who wanted to wrap bizarre ideas in obscure language: he wanted to set out a rational view of why our culture is the way it is which can seem to be totally irrational until you understand what is behind things. If he had had knowledge of periodic cosmic catastrophes such as those explicated in the works of Victor Clube and Bill Napier, (The Cosmic Serpent as well as Firestone, West and Warwick-Smith, The Cycle of Cosmic Catastrophes: How a Stone-Age Comet Changed the Course of World Culture he would have been able to take the topic to its most basic level: fear of death manipulated by individuals seeking power. For that part of the story, you need to read Becker's Escape from Evil.

In any event, The Ancient City is definitely a big piece of the puzzle. If you read the works of Julius Caesar, (Caesar's Commentaries. The Complete Gallic Wars. Revised.: Revised Edition (Latin Edition) you will want to read Fustel first so as to better understand that most amazing of heroes, the one who could have saved Rome had the wealthy elite not been so greedy and psychopathic, and had he not been so humane and forgiving.

In short, in order to understand a lot of things about ancient history, the history of Rome, and our own civilization which is the daughter of Rome, you need to read Fustel. And you will enjoy it and be glad you did!

Classic introduction to Mediterranean society

I was first exposed to this book in an anthropology class, where the professor used it to introduce the anthropological concept of descent, i.e. the inheritance of collective rights to valuable resources (above all land), through birth in a clan. Having read and research much more on this topic, and come back to "Ancient City," I find it still one of the most lucid expositions of descent and lineage institutions. (Note, though, that Mediterranean clans are somewhat unusual in being endogamous, not exogamous, like those of the Eastern Asia or sub-Saharan Africa).
Readers familiar with Herodotus or Livy will find their questions about the importance of bones of heroes and cult images answered in this book.
Also for anyone familiar with the Old Testament, and hoping to learn more about its social background, this book ought to be a fascinating read. Page after page can be annotated with Biblical verses (it is hard to believe that Fustel de Coulanges was not thinking of these verses when he wrote the book). The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is, in part, a recognizable Mediterranean family God--although Fustel de Coulanges argues that this same God, when revealed in the Christian Gospel, decisively transformed the ancient city into a new civilization based not on family gods, but on one universal God.
Fustel de Coulanges works with a typical 19th century social evolutionist view, one that is hardly acceptable today. His lack of knowledge about the other areas leads him to assume, for example, that endogamy is an inherent feature of clan-family religion; as noted above, this is incorrect. Once you control for these understandable errors, however, the progression from family to tribe to city, while unacceptable as a history, does make the exposition easy to follow.
Finally, when looking at this work in the context of today's knowledge particularly of archeology, what "Ancient City" strongly implies is the continuity between Bronze Age and Iron Age civilization in the Mediterranean. Twentieth century historians (including Momigliano, who wrote an introduction for the paperback edition) often seem to work with the assumption that the cataclysm of 1250-1200 BC created a tabula rasa in Greek history. To Fustel de Coulanges, the post-monarchic era from 700 BC on is not the defining moment of Greek and Roman civilization, but only a phase in its transformation into the semi-universal civilization of the Hellenistic and Roman imperial periods.
To conclude, this book is still an important work that should stimulate thought on the clan-tribal foundations of both classical and Biblical civilization.

the classical literature, it can correct much of the nonsense
in most current work about Athenian Democracy, Roman Empire
or the realities of Indo-European Pagan Religion as practiced
in the City-States of the Ancient World.

Also contains the detailed information to show that the
gens (family group) based mounted invaders who brought the Olympian
Gods to Ancient Europe had no only wagons, but iron swords and
advanced astronomical knowledge, since their hearth-based altars and
ceremonies are based on the requirements of the ancient iron-working
and weapon mending techniques, and they could tell anniversary dates which
means they knew how to tell when a solar year from any date had elapsed.

The book was originally written in scholarly protest against the
claims of Emperor Louis Napoleon III that he was re-establishing the Roman Empire
and the Athenian Polis,etc. It remains an excellent antidote to the
foolish claims today to have re-established Ancient Ways by various political and
social gadflies.

Not ones to keep secrets, Rosen, the grandson of Junior's founder, and Allen (Junior's Cheesecake Cookbook) start with the recipe that has been the backbone of Junior's success, the New York Cheesecake. They present a nice collection of recipes accompanied by historical and anecdotal sidebars that do not distract. If there are any surprises here it is the inclusion of a small group of soda fountain desserts, including egg creams, freezes, shakes, malts, and sundaes. The bulk of the recipes are mostly standards of the restaurant: tall cakes, down-homey pies, cupcakes, and tarts and cookies. The authors even reach into the archives of Junior's first menu and include a recipe for Nesselrode Whipped Cream Pie, a rum custard pie, largely absent from contemporary menus.
Verdict There is a definite New York influence here, seen in egg creams, rugelach, and desserts inspired by black-and-white cookies; however, with a troubleshooting section and baking hints along the way, this book could easily be used as a resource for standard desserts. The recipes are too good to pass up. —Library Journal

Alan Rosen, the grandson of Junior’s founder, Harry Rosen, is the third generation co-owner (with his father, Walter, and brother, Kevin) of Junior’s restaurants in Brooklyn, Times Square, Grand Central Station, and at the Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut. He also oversees Junior’s mail-order and wholesale businesses, as well as its online business, juniorscheesecake.com. Alan makes regular appearances on QVC and The Food Network.

Yum, I love cheesecake!

Junior's is well known for their cheesecakes, which are considered by many to be the best in the world. Located in Brooklyn, it's a must-go for lots of visitors to New York.

So if you're a cheesecake lover, you're going to be thrilled they have a cookbook now, and the book does start with some great cheesecake recipes. Classic New York style to start with, then getting into more complicated cheesecakes. Personally I had to wipe up a little drool after just reading the recipe for the Red Velvet Cheesecake which is a "skyscraper" style cake, 5 inches tall with cake, cheesecake and cream cheese icing. The tiramisu charlotte is a new favorite for my family.

After the cheesecake recipes comes a chapter on soda fountain desserts. Perfect egg creams, orange freeze drinks, milkshakes, malted and ice cream treats. As much as I love cheesecake, this is my favorite chapter. My family loves ice cream, I'm pretty sure if you asked my dad, he would say it's favorite food. This is the chapter for hot sunny days.

Black and Whites covers two-tone desserts that are stylish and tasty. Cheesecakes, cookies, malteds and a couple other recipes. The Oreo Little Fellows look like the perfect cool dessert for my daughter's July birthday.

Layer Cakes and Cupcakes is self explanatory and full of wonderful baked goods. My favorite in this chapter is Grandma's Lemon Loaf. It's plain looking compared to the rest of the desserts, but I love loaf cakes.

Pie Shoppe has whipped cream pies, adorable tartlets and classic pie recipes. Recommended- the Bourbon Sweet Potato Pie.

Save Room For Dessert has recipes that don't fit into the rest of the chapters like blintzes, brownies, cookies and pudding. It even includes a recipe for fried cheesecake.

For Those Watching Their Sugar is where this book becomes very much a favorite for me. I don't have to watch mine, but my uncle is diabetic and I like making him a special treat every so often. With several cheesecake recipes, a muffin recipe and a couple mousse recipes, this one will keep him happy for years.

The last chapter contains instructions for things that are used in several recipes. Crusts, sauces, whipped cream and ganache.

The instructions for the recipes are clear and well written, and there are bits of trivia and tips sprinkled liberally through out the book. The photos are incredible.

Good recipes and great tips

Junior's restaurants in New York are known for great food and delicious cheesecakes. Junior's Dessert Cookbook contains 75 recipes including their famous cheesecakes, layered cakes, and pies. The chapter on the basics includes sauces, buttercreams, and decorations for the different desserts. And if you become stuck or there is a problem with the baked items, the table at the back of the book lists probable causes and how to fix it next time around.

Chapters include recipes for all their favorites: Junior's Famous Cheesecakes; Fabulous Soda Fountain Desserts; Black & White; Junior's Layer Cakes and Cupcakes; Junior's Pie Shoppe; Save Room for Dessert; For Those Watching Their Sugar; Baker's Basics; What to Do If Your Dessert Is Not Perfect; and Metric Equivalents.

All in all, a good dessert cookbook. Their cheesecakes are the main draw to their menus, and the recipes for them deliver. The recipes stress using quality ingredients, and the many tips encourage successful baking.

I have 3 of the Junior's cookbooks and I have yet to be disappointed in any recipe. Even when I exchange healthier ingredients among those indicated, I get a good outcome. Some of these recipes have been adopted as our 'go to' recipes for family events.

About the Author
NOAH D. MANRING is James C. Dowell Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at University of Missouri–Columbia (UMC). Before joining the faculty at UMC, he worked for eight years in the off-highway mobile equipment industry. He holds ten U.S. patents for innovations in the field of fluid power. As a professor, he has received research funding from Caterpillar, Inc., Festo Corp., and the National Fluid Power Association, among others, as well as the U.S. Department of Education, the National Science Foundation, and various private donors. He currently serves as an associate editor of the International Journal of Fluid Power and the Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement, and Control. He has done consulting work for several industrial firms including Moog Inc., FMC Wyoming Corp., Dennison Hydraulics, and Parker Hannifin.

The author of this book was my professor in the Hydraulic control systems class at MIZZOU. Therefore, I bought this book since it is the textbook for the class. I would like to say that this book is very useful in order to understand the hydraulic systems. I've got a lot of knowledge from it. Easy to understand.

Probably the Best Book on the Market for Designing Practical Hydraulic Systems form Basic to Advanced

Excellent book for understanding and using hydraulic systems and components. It is written as a textbook, but still has great examples of analyses throughout the book. This is an excellent follow-on to Merrit's book. No important concepts are relegated to "homework" problems. The author is an excellent writer and leaves no stone unturned to cover the material. Very few typos and the book's progression is logical and intuitive. The book covers three areas: fundamentals (with more depth than fundamentals), hydraulic components (not a simplistic, cursory approach like Pippinger), and hydraulic control systems. This book is worth twice the price for engineers needing more advanced design approach information.

Excellent Reference

Noah Manring was my professor for this course at the University of Missouri back in 2007.

Now, as a working fluid power/controls engineer, I still continue to reference this book regularly. There are good explanations for the different types of systems used in hydraulic circuits. The problems are good practice to familiarize the student with the types of analyses in hydraulic systems.

I highly recommend this book for student and professionals alike who would like a better analytic background on the types of control systems used in hydraulics.

Disappointed.

This is not quite a book, as a special issue of Sunset Magazine. I don't live in a tropical zone, and there is some info about tropical-like plants that will grow in colder climates, but not enough to make this book useful. I can find more info on the Internet.

Great buy for the Tropical Gardener

If you're like me, you prefer beautiful tropical landscape images over reading text about gardens. This book does an excellent job of that, particularly for the price. I regularly purchase books on tropical gardening, and what I don't want is another listing of plants, I can get that from the mail order catalogues. I like to see images of tropical environments that I can consider recreating, or views that show good tropical garden designs of actual plants (not drawn images). For the money, this book is well worth it.
