Leonard Cohen: Everybody Knows, by Harvey Kubernik

No other contemporary songwriter has created a body of work of such consistent quality, and such singular emotional and intellectual brilliance, as Leonard Cohen. His smoke-black vocal style navigates the most sophisticated and arresting of melodies in songs infused with romance, innuendo, and humor. Arriving at the 60s pop-music party fashionably late, Cohen released his debut albumSongs of Leonard Cohenin 1967. At 33 years of age, he was the adult in the room, a room brimming, then as now, with literary pretension and artistic self-importance. But Cohen, already established as a respected poet and novelist, was the real deal. In the decades since, he has battled with drugs, love, and bankruptcy; become a Buddhist monk while simultaneously reaffirming his Jewish faith; and recorded 11 more albums of unfailingly affecting beauty. Beginning with Cohen the young poet and author in his home town of Montreal and ending with his 2012 releaseOld Ideasand recent acclaimed live performances, Everybody Knows honors Leonard Cohens 80th birthday by celebrating his genius and tracing his rise to stardom through 200 photographs and the thoughts, memories, and reflections of those who have both worked with and been inspired by him.

''For fans of Cohen's music, the book provides an invaluable look at how he made the transition to song from poetry.'' --Analog Planet

''[T]his is a must-own for all stripes of Cohen fans. All stripes of Cohen fans...As both a solid reference work-one could easily use this as a primary source when researching specific details and events of Cohen's life-and a handsome volume suitable for thumbing through, Everybody Knows is a rousing success.'' --Blurt

KNIGHT OF RECKONING

The Emperor’s ruthless Order 66 has all but exterminated the Jedi. The few remaining who still wield the Force for good have been driven into exile or hiding. But not Jax Pavan, who’s been steadily striking blows against the Empire—as a lone guerrilla fighter and a valued partner of Whiplash, a secret Coruscant-based resistance group. Now he’s taking on his most critical mission: transporting a valued Whiplash leader, targeted for assassination, from Coruscant to safety on a distant world. It’s a risky move under any circumstances, but Jax and his trusted crew aboard the Far Ranger, including the irrepressible droid I-Five, are prepared to pit their combat skills and their vessel’s firepower against all Imperial threats—except the one Jax fears most. Reports have raced across the galaxy that the dark lord of the Sith has fallen in a duel to the death with a Rebel freedom fighter. But Jax discovers the chilling truth when he reaches out with the Force . . . only to touch the dark, unmistakable, and malignantly alive presence that is Darth Vader. And Jax knows that Vader will stop at nothing until the last Jedi has fallen.

" FULL OF LIGHTSABER BATTLES, THE JEDI PHILOSOPHY, AND LOTS OF NEW LIFE-FORMS."
"--Chicago Sun-Times

" Reaves writes with a creative flair, allowing readers to experience an almost cinematic sensation as they move through the story. The language is colorful, the action scenes are dynamic, and the dialogue is realistic.... Shadow Hunter is a very good "Star Wars" novel that reads as easily as a comic book.... Reaves does an excellent job."

“Sakiyan freighter Far Ranger requesting clearance for departure.”

I-Five’s mimicry of Tuden Sal’s gruff voice was flawless. No one listening—or, more to the point, no vocal analyzer scanning—would know that, in reality, the Sakiyan merchant was sitting in a safe house somewhere in the twilight warren near the Westport, plotting infamy against the Empire. No one, that was, except for the Far Ranger’s crew and her lone passenger.

Jax Pavan, his hands on the Far Ranger’s steering yoke, realized he was holding his breath as he waited for the Westport flight dispatcher to approve their departure plan. He let his tension go with a soft rush of air and ignored the urge to reach out with the Force to give the dispatcher a nudge. It was tempting, but best not to take the chance. Even something as minor as that could alert Darth Vader to their movements . . . if Vader was, against all odds, still alive.

Jax believed that he was. Even though he hadn’t sensed the Dark Lord’s uniquely powerful indentation in the fabric of the Force lately, it was difficult to conceive of such power, such concentrated evil, being gone, being over, being done. And until he gazed upon Vader’s corpse with his own eyes, until he could reach out and touch him with the tendrils that constituted his own connection with the living Force and sense no reciprocation . . .

Well, until that came to pass, Jax knew he couldn’t be too careful.

And speaking of erring on the side of caution . . . was the silence on the comlink just a little too long? Had someone suspicious of the freighter’s relatively new Sakiyan registry connected the ship to Jax Pavan?

Am I overthinking this?

“Far Ranger, your ascent plan is approved. Your departure window is . . .”

There was a pause, and Jax held his breath again. I-Five glanced at him and let two pearls of luminescence migrate, left to right, along the top outside rims of his photoreceptors—the droid’s equivalent of rolling his eyes.

“Ten standard minutes—on my mark.”

“Aye,” said I-Five.

“Mark.”

“Beginning ascent.” I-Five cut the comlink and turned to Jax. “She’s all yours. And not a single battle cruiser on our tail, that I can see.”

Jax ignored the droid’s sarcasm. His left hand eased forward on the thruster control as his right pulled up and back on the steering yoke. The ship, a modified Corellian Action VI transport, lifted from the spaceport docking bay into the night sky, which, even at this elevation, was a blaze of ambient light. Jax felt the vibration of the ship through the yoke, felt it merge with his desire to be away from Coruscant until it seemed to him that Far Ranger itself yearned above all things to leap into hyperspace before even clearing the atmosphere.

The sky changed. It warmed to twilight, to daybreak, to full day, then cycled back again through dusk and twilight as they soared, finally, into the flat black of space. They saw no stars; the glorious blaze of the city-planet’s night side was enough to drown out even the nearby nebulae of the Core completely.

I-Five sent a last message back to Flight Control in Tuden Sal’s gravelly tones: “Far Ranger away.”

“Aye. Clear skies.”

The droid shut down the comlink and Jax navigated above the orbital plane, adjusted course, and set the autopilot to their first jump coordinates. Then he sat back to clear his head.

He felt a touch—in his mind and on his arm. Laranth. He turned his head to look up at her. She was grinning at him—or at least, she was doing something that was as close to grinning as she was likely to get. One whole corner of her mouth had curled upward by at least a millimeter.

“Nervous, are we?” she asked. “I could feel you angsting all the way up in the weaponry bay.”

“What were you doing up there?”

“Getting the feel of the new triggering mechanism.”

“Nervous, are we?” Jax mimicked, smiling.

“Being proactive.” She gave his arm a squeeze and glanced out the viewport. “I’ll be glad to be out of this gravity well. Too much traffic here by half. Any one of those ships—” She nodded toward their closest companions in flight: a Toydarian grain transport, another Corellian freighter, a private yacht. “—could be targeting us right now.”

“You’re being paranoid,” Jax assured her. “If Vader were watching us, I’d know. We’d know.”

“Vader watching us—now, there’s a cheery thought.” Den Dhur stepped onto the bridge and slid into the jump seat behind Jax. “I’m hoping he’s watching us from beyond the crematorium.”

“Paranoia,” I-Five said. “Another human emotion I just don’t get. The list of things both animate and inanimate in this galaxy that are capable of utterly annihilating you is longer than a superstring . . . yet real danger evidently isn’t enough: you organics aren’t happy without making up a bevy of bogeymen to scare you even more.”

Jax said nothing. In the months since their last confrontation with the Dark Lord—a confrontation in which one of their Whiplash team had betrayed them and another self-immolated trying to assassinate Vader—they had heard not even a whisper about either his whereabouts or his condition. There had been no reports on the HoloNet, no rumors from highly placed officials, no speculation or stories by various life-forms in places like the Blackpit Slums or the Southern Underground. It was as if the very concept of Vader had vanished along with his corporeal form.

And yet Jax still couldn’t believe that his nemesis was dead, as much as he wanted to. The entire scenario had been too perfect. In the thrall of a potent drug that enhanced Force abilities in unpredictable ways, Vader had lashed out wildly, trying to fend off his would-be assassin. The release of energy had been enough to vaporize the unfortunate Haninum Tyk Rhinann, who’d pushed Vader over the edge—in more ways than one. Both of them had fallen a great distance. Rhinann had died.

Vader had vanished.

If Darth Vader had been a normal human being—or even a normal Jedi—Jax could assume he was dead, as well. But he was neither of those things. He was at once less and more than human. At once less and more than a Jedi. He was a powerful merger of the human and the inhuman. He was a Sith . . . who had once called Jax friend. For Jax suspected—no, more than suspected, knew—that Darth Vader had somehow once been Anakin Skywalker. He had sensed it through the Force, and in their last encounter Vader had confirmed it with a slip of the tongue that might well have been intentional.

The man who wouldn’t die.

“You going to share that load with us, Jax?” Den was looking at him with eyes that only seemed lazy. “Have you sensed anything about Vader since . . .” The Sullustan made a boom gesture with both stubby-fingered hands.

Jax shook his head. “Nothing. But Den, if he’d died, I think I’d know that. There would have been a huge shift in the Force if a being of that much focused power was destroyed.”

“I saw the flaming backwash from ground zero,” Den objected. “That wasn’t a shift?”

“No, that was a light show. Mostly flash, with a little substance. It was enough to kill Rhinann. But I don’t think it killed Vader.”

The Sullustan looked to Laranth. “No joy from you, either?”

“Sorry, Den. I’m of the same opinion. He might be severely injured and in a bacta tank somewhere, but he’s not dead. The most we can hope for is that he’ll be out of commission long enough for us to get Yimmon to safety.”

“You just came from Yimmon, didn’t you?” Jax asked Den, and at the Sullustan’s nod, he added, “How does he seem?”

Den shrugged. “About like you’d expect a guy to seem who’s been nearly dead four times in the last three weeks.”

Jax took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Those near-hits were why they were removing Thi Xon Yimmon from Coruscant. The leader of the anti-Imperial resistance cell known locally as Whiplash had been targeted a number of times in the past weeks by Imperial forces. In two cases, only the fact that Jax and his team had a friend on the police force—a Zabrak prefect named Pol Haus—had tipped them to the threat in time to avoid it.

In a twisted way, the Imperial attention to Whiplash—and Yimmon in particular—was flattering. It meant they had risen from mere annoyances to serious threats. Perhaps the Empire had even made the connection between the local resistance on Imperial Center and the broader movement that was springing up on a growing number of far-flung worlds. In practical terms, this meant that—over the last several months—the Imperial orders had gone from “shoot ’em if they get in the way” to “ferret them out, track them down, and destroy them.”

The Emperor had also changed tactics. Absent from these recent attempts at annihilation were the Force-sniffing, raptorlike Inquisitors. Now the attacks came from Force-insensitive bounty hunters and battle droids. It was as if, having failed to turn the gifts of the Force against Yimmon and his cohort, the Emperor was simply throwing every mundane weapon in his arsenal at them.

Jax wanted to believe that these were the acts of a desperate tyrant who had just lost his most potent weapon. He wanted to believe it as much as he wanted to believe that Vader was gone. But . . .

The man who wouldn’t die.

He shook himself, realizing he had come to think of Darth Vader as inevitable . . . and immortal.

Whatever hideous truth lay behind that feeling, Jax could not let it distract him from the hard reality that the Empire wanted Whiplash dead and buried. The Empire, being the hierarchical beast that it was, figured this was best done by destroying the brains of the organization. But Yimmon—with his dual cortex and a personal cell of operatives that included a Jedi, a Gray Paladin, and a sentient droid—was a hard man to kill or capture. Still, the last attempt had come close. Too close. Way too close. It had taken out several storefronts and more than a dozen innocent citizens who happened to be too near a tavern that the Whiplash had used to pass messages.

An Outstanding Addition to the Coruscant Nights Series
By Skuldren
“Let me make this clear. Anakin Skywalker is dead. Burned to a cinder and blown away by the winds of betrayal.” -Darth Vader

The Last Jedi is a book full of surprises. While the title of the novel may be way off the mark as far as canon goes, that’s not something Jax Pavan knows. For him, he may be the only Jedi left. As the galaxy descends into the dark times, Jax finds himself becoming more and more focused on Darth Vader. He is the nightmare to Jax’s hope. In this story of darkness, Jax has to conquer the shadows and face his fears. But we all know that Vader isn’t the one who dies.

“A door opened, and out of it poured light and darkness…twilight. Like the moment before dawn. It was…unexpected.” -Darth Vader

Readers may be surprised to find out that the majority of this novel is actually rather sad. This is the dark times after all. Bad things happen to Jax and his friends early on, and they plague them throughout the book. Jax struggles to overcome those loses and it takes him a while. Almost 60 percent of the book is dominated by Jax’s downward spiral, but after that, things take a well timed turn. There are some climatic battles at the end. Many characters die, plans run afoul, and at times, things were at their darkest. It makes for a hell of a journey.

Then there is the eye popping plunge into the Force. It’s sort of a subplot interwoven into the book. Several characters do some explorations of the Force and there are some story threads that dive into the metaphysical. There are soul searching moments that propel characters to their fates. The deepest of those moments is on Dathomir when Jax dives into a Sith holocron with the help of Dathomiri witches. As a Jedi, you have to ask yourself how far you are willing to go to defeat your enemy. For Jax, that’s pretty far. And then there’s the Dark Lord, Darth Vader, who has some pretty good parts in the novel as well. Personally, I thought Vader had some of the best lines in the book, and it’s been awhile since I’ve seen a writer do Vader dialog this impressive.

For those who might have grown tired of all the action on Coruscant, The Last Jedi takes a nice break from the planet. There’s still some action there, but major events unfold elsewhere. Jax and his band wind up on Toprawa with the Antarian Rangers, do some sight seeing on Mandalore, and find time for a side trip to Dathomir. With some of the recent The Clone Wars episodes, readers will catch some intriguing remarks about Satine and the government of Mandalore as well as the Shadow Collective, Hutt cartels, and the Black Sun. It all helps shed a little light on the fate of planet. The events on Dathomir are also nice at bridging the gap between TCW and the far off novel The Courtship of Princess Leia.

In the end, I have to say that The Last Jedi was a damn fine novel. It explored some excellent emotional depths and touched upon some intriguing intellectual threads. The story really fired on all cylinders. If you’ve read the Coruscant Nights books up until now, you’ll definitely want to check this one out. However, if you’re new to the series, you may not feel quite the emotional punch with some of the blows that come in the story. Still, it’s a pretty good story worth diving into, and it’ll probably spark your interest to check the rest of the series out.

I give The Last Jedi a five out of five.

Another good Star Wars book
By shaneluke29
The Last Jedi was a fast pace moving book! Not all characters are safe, everyone is in doubt, and the ending is definitely a surprise! This darker novel really delves into how much a person who is hunted can go on. By having the protagonist open up to the audience, it gives you that extra layer that he isn't invincible. I will say the ending was very well done due to the fact you were left guessing at what would happen at every page. Over all, I thought it was a well down novel that introduced enough new characters and traveled to different planets to keep it interesting and the plot moving along.

It is ok

I loved pink panther cartoon and music for a long time, so I tried to find the music score to play. However, the content is not what I am expect. The score is too easy, it is for the beginning. I am a little disappointed .

wonderful Christmas romance sure to add a touch of laughter and light to your day
By Gaele
A cowboy-laden Christmas romance, this is the first time I’ve read a book from Jennifer Ryan. A wonderful heartwarming Christmas story that reinforces the power and rightness in true love.

Summer is wonderful, most certainly determined and unwilling to let the ‘strong silent’ archetypes of her brother and the man she loves stop her roll. She’s got the right blend of determination and hesitancy, an ability to make a reader giggle, and despite their protestations to the contrary; has both men wrapped about her little finger. Fortunately, she isn’t manipulative or aggressive with this power, but she does seem to enjoy making her brother uncomfortable.

Jack is a big old growly bear – not in a bad way – more in the ‘I know better’ sense, avoiding conflict and direct challenge by being a bit overbearing and prickly. Sam was wonderful, adding a touch of sense and trying to talk people down. And Caleb – the one who has it so bad for Summer he can’t see straight. But the relationship with her brother does keep him holding her firmly in the ‘friend zone’. Until Summer almost turns herself inside out to show him what he is avoiding, or too blind to see….
A quick and short read that is full of heart and a touch of heat, this story is a wonderful Christmas romance sure to add a touch of laughter and light to your day

I received an eBook copy from the publisher via Edelweiss for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

A great little holiday story
By ysar
Caleb knows what he wants, but going after his best friend's little sister is against the rules. However, Summer doesn't care about his misplaced sense of loyalty, and she's not about to let Caleb's friendship with her brother get in the way of the relationship she wants.

The Verdict: Novellas are tough for me because they often either feel rushed or I'm left wondering where the rest of the story is. However, this was one of the few I could really get into and enjoy. In having the characters already in love but unwilling to admit it, the foundation for their relationship had already been well established, and this novella simply let us in on their finally giving into their feelings.

Caleb is dealing with the usual issue of having fallen in love with his best friend's little sister, but he's also got some leftover baggage from war, and he's not handling it well at all. Summer, however, isn't going to let her life be decided by her big brother, and she's strong enough to stand up to Caleb's stubborn side.

The story is quick, of course, but lots of fun as Caleb tries to deal with Summer living on the ranch with him as his best friend remains completely clueless about their feelings for each other. There's plenty of awkwardness, banter, a headstrong heroine, and ultimately steamy moments to keep us entertained, and despite it's short length, it's a great little holiday story.

Very few novellas manage to create character depth and a full and dynamic plot worthy of a 5-star rating from me, but... here we are.
Summer is in love with Caleb, but Caleb has it in his mind that regardless how he feels about Summer, he cannot act upon it because she is Jack's little sister. Jack's his best friend and there's a bro-code to follow. If that's not enough, they served in Iraq together and he feels he owes his life to Jack. Even more, now he's even working for Jack on the ranch. To say Summer is off-limits is an understatement. But she's determined as all get-out to make him hers.

Is it possible for a reader to fall in love with a novella's hero? Most definitely. Caleb and Jack's tormented souls each deserve a full-length novel. Great characters, written with loads of depth and dimension. The dialogue is smart and sassy by turns. The plot is very enjoyable and flows so smoothly I wanted more. The entire plot was based on the conflict, which obviously gets resolved in a wonderful way. I easily would have enjoyed this story and these characters if it would have been a full-length novel and am intrigued with the rest of the series as a result.

Summa Kitharologica, Volume 1 The Physiology of Guitar Playing: Functional Anatomy and Physiomechanics, by Ricardo Iznaola

Ricardo Iznaola's long-awaited Summa Kitharologica (vol. 1) is the culmination of three decades of deep exploration of the guitarist's playing mechanism and is the most comprehensive presentation of his thinking about these matters to date. Structured in three chapters, Chapter 1 surveys basic anatomy and physiology of the upper limb, with additional sections discussing general pedagogical considerations. Chapter 2, devoted to the right hand, presents detailed information regarding digital joint behavior in general and as applied in actual activity on the guitar, as well as introducing an analytical system to study and describe positional attitudes, or `frames', adopted by the hand in the course of playing. Chapter 3 discusses at length left-hand physiomechanics, taking the concepts of shifting and mobility as fundamental categories encompassing all aspects of left-hand technique. Twenty-six anatomical figures, over fifty photos and more than sixty musical examples, as well as access to online video, amply illustrate the text. "In the spirit of ground-breaking scientific pioneers, celebrated performer and pedagogue Ricardo Iznaola offers the guitar world the first volume of Summa Kitharologica, a comprehensive and highly insightful examination of guitar technique in a remarkable mixture of soaring erudition and down-to-earth practical and applicable approaches to the instrument. Like a modern-day Charles Darwin of the guitar, his insatiable passion for discovery, keen eye of the `naturalist' and relentless analytical mind have carefully and methodically recorded previously little-known or little-recognized observations, relationships and nuances about the natural principles at work in artful guitar playing. For guitar instructors, serious students and even advanced performers who desire to go beyond the `what' of guitar technique and delve into its `whys' and `hows', this may well be the definitive text." Henry Adams, former editor, Guitar and Lute Magazine. Includes access to online video.

Great Book, Typo problems.
By Kale Good
Five stars for Ricardo Iznaola and the content he has created here. I'm a huge fan of everything that Iznaola has written. I only wish I could get some lessons with him.

Mel Bay, however, gets 0 stars for their editorial work. There are numerous typos in the section on Right Hand Framing; I've verified 3 with the author. I'm particularly harsh with Mel Bay here because I actually purchased this product using a coupon they gave me for reporting typos in another product of theirs. They desperately need to improve their editorial process.

Good for Advanced player and Teacher
By Paskal Djajasoekarta
This book explains physiology of Classical Guitar playing with medical background so it's very revealing for any serious CG guitar player. The description of human anatomy needs some effort to understand, the medical nomenclature was very difficult for those who never have a biology background.

The 'technical' imperfection on this book is in nail photo (Photo 1-2) on p.55. Ricardo's nail captured out of focus, so it's difficult to see the explanation given by that photo. Other thing was fine.

I thought it's good for advanced player and teacher but not for beginner.

Hired to watch the baby while Jared recovers from his injuries, Jenny Stratford is thrilled to have a summer job in the Crescent City. In no time she falls in love with the baby. While Jared’s name is on the birth certificate, the baby isn’t his and he plans to put her up for adoption. He can’t take her with him to the oil fields, and doesn’t plan to settle down any time soon. Jenny thinks this would be a mistake and tries to talk Jared into raising the little girl in honor of his best friend. If he weren’t so set on returning to the middle east–a place totally unsuitable for an infant–would he consider it? The clash of values puts them on the opposite sides of the issue. Only when it comes time for Jared to relinquish the baby are all the loose ends tied up.

A wonderful story of how a sweet baby brings together two people who previously had wildly different plans for their futures. The heat of a New Orleans summer and living under the same roof pushes them to test out a physical relationship, which both regret almost immediately. Jenny and Jared had been hurt in the past, providing solid reasons for keeping their distance initially. Only through one character’s major shift in thinking do they get to enjoy a happily every after.

Two damaged people find solace in each other
By Shauna S. Roberts
THE BACHELOR'S BABY PROMISE is a contemporary romance set in New Orleans' French Quarter about two badly damaged people.

Jared Montgomery is a geologist or engineer of some sort with a strong wanderlust. At the opening of the book, he is coming home to recuperate from extensive injuries received in an oil well explosion in the Middle East, an explosion that also killed his best friend. He is bringing his friend's illegitimate baby with him to place for adoption so it will have a good home in America. He needs a nanny for the baby in the meantime.

Jenny Stratford, a teacher, grew up an orphan in a children's home, never chosen for adoption and never knowing anything about her parents or other relatives. This experience left her so emotionally scarred that she has no ambitions, no hobbies, no interests of any kind except finding a husband and having babies. Making her situation even worse, she has just dumped her fiancé because he was taking advantage of her: he didn't love her; he only wanted someone to take care of his kids. So when Jenny hears of the nanny job in New Orleans, she takes it.

Although I felt very sorry for Jenny, I never got to like her. When she is with Jared, she nags him almost unceasingly. When she isn't with Jared, she obsessively replays earlier events of the book in her head over and over. She doesn't seem intelligent enough to have a college degree. Her conversational topics are limited and boring. She routinely parks illegally in a pedestrian-only zone (somehow without getting ticketed). Jared's apartment is one of the most expensive and sought-after places to live in the city, yet she never notices its woodwork, quirky layout, high ceilings, or interior courtyard. Our glorious cathedral is steps away, but she never goes in to see it. Ditto for our many art galleries, museums, and interesting restaurants within walking distance. She was blind to everything wonderful around her; she noticed only the baby, Jared, and a neighbor in the building.

Jared I did like. His enthusiasm for seeing the world makes him much more understandable a person than Jenny, and his honor makes him likable. He makes the best of a bad situation without grousing about it or pitying himself.

Under ordinary circumstances, I suspect the two would never be interested in each other. They have little in common and want completely different kinds of lives. But being forced together for weeks on end with an attractive member of the opposite sex makes them fall for each other against their own wishes.

The tension of the story rests in several questions. Will the baby have to grow up without any knowledge of her family as Jenny did? Will Jared's job in the Middle East still be exciting without his best friend to share it with? What will happen to Jared and Jenny's relationship when each returns to her/his job?

Different viewpoints believable and worth cheering about
By Emma Bain
What I found interesting in this book was that three people had very disparate goals (and, yes, I'm including the adorable baby Jamie) and that I found each viewpoint believable and worth cheering on. Which means that I was hoping the three would find common ground but having no faith that it could happen. Like the New Orleans setting, the book simmered with tension. I thought Mrs. Giraux a terrific foil for the situation with Jared and Jenny and a wonderful character, too. I'd recommend the book for those who like romance that deals with the push/pull issues of adventuring in exotic locations versus establishing roots and family in a small town.

Gender Justice, Development, and RightsFrom Oxford University Press

The 1990s represented a shift in the international development agenda in the direction of a greater emphasis on rights and democracy. This brought many positive changes in women's rights and political representation as well as in human rights more broadly. In much of the world, however, these advances were not matched by significant progress in the achievement of greater social justice. Rising income inequalities, coupled with widespread poverty in many countries, have been accompanied by record levels of crime and violence. Meanwhile the global shift in the consensus over the role of the state in welfare provision has in many contexts entailed the down-sizing of public services and the re-allocation of service delivery to commercial interests, charitable groups, NGOs and households.
Liberalism and its Discontents reflects on this ambivalent record, and on the significance accorded in international development policy to rights and democracy in the post-Cold War era. Key items on the contemporary policy agenda-neo-liberal economic and social policies; democracy; and multiculturalism-are addressed here by leading scholars and regional specialists through theoretical reflections and detailed case studies. Together they constitute a collection which casts contemporary liberalism in a distinctive light by applying a gender perspective to the analysis of political and policy processes. Case studies from Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East, East-Central Europe, South and South-east Asia contribute a cross-cultural dimension to the analysis of contemporary liberalism-the dominant value system in the modern world-and how it exists, and is resisted, in developing and post-transition societies.

Review
... timely ... The case for a holistic approach to women's rights is powerfully argued, and empirically evidenced, together with the case for universal state provision to guarantee key social rights. Gender Justice, Development, and Rights is an extremely relevant contribution to social policy debates internationally as well as more locally, in the British context. Journal of Social Policy
