About the Author
Archpriest Josiah B. Trenham is pastor of St. Andrew Orthodox Christian Church in Riverside, California. A former clergyman of the Presbyterian and Reformed Episcopal Churches, in 1993 he was received into the Orthodox Church and ordained to the holy priesthood by Bishop Basil of Wichita and Mid-America. In 2004 he received his Ph.D. in theology from the University of Durham, England, where he studied under the renowned Orthodox Christian professor of Patristics Fr. Andrew Louth. Since 2004, Fr. Josiah has served as Adjunct Professor of History at California Baptist University in Riverside. He participates in yearly academic forums and symposia, conducts numerous parish retreats each year throughout the United States and Canada, and is the founder of Patristic Nectar Publications. He and his presbytera, Catherine, were married in 1988, and from their happy union have been born nine children.

not a bit dull or dry as I feared it might be

First of all, the form: even though it is a Ph.D. dissertation, it makes for quite engaging reading, not a bit dull or dry as I feared it might be. It is, however, very concise and somewhat dense in places, and the footnotes occasionally occupy more space on the page than the main text. This is not light reading. If that's your cup of tea, you will enjoy this book.

Second, the content: this book is bound to offend anyone with modern views on sexuality. Given how fast and drastically modern values have changed in this area, this can only be a good thing. Some reviewers have denounced it as presenting extreme and unbalanced views, not representative of Orthodox teaching. Certainly it is true that many (most?) Orthodox today would be greatly surprised to find out what the Church has always taught, because it is hardly ever taught now. It is not the author, however, and still less St. John Chrysostom, who are extreme. It is rather our own times and social values which are extreme and unbalanced, having departed quite far from the teaching of the Church, and this book offers a welcome corrective.

Far from being "arrogant" and "dismissive", as one reviewer slanderously asserts, Fr. Josiah engages other scholars thoughtfully and honestly. Nor is it true, as another reviewer wrote, that virginity is valued at the expense of marriage. Rather, St. John Chrysostom taught, and Fr. Josiah repeatedly emphasized, that both marriage and virginity are blessed, but that the latter path is the ideal for those who are able. This is the teaching of St. Paul and of Christ himself, as anyone who has read the New Testament can verify.

a renewed paradigm

This book is Fr. Josiah Trenham's thesis submitted for his degree in philosophy at the University of Durham, England. Saint John Chrysostom gets right down to the nitty-gritty details and shows us he was quite sensitive to the difficulties and joys of marriage.

Although this book is entitled, "Marriage & Virginity according to Saint John Chrysostom", this work also includes an corresponding overview of Tertullian, St. Clement of Alexandria, Origen, St. Methodios of Olympus, St. Athanasios the Great and St. Ephrem the Syrian. Through this patristic synthesis Father Josiah presents us with a coherent Christian view of marriage and consecrated virginity.

I lent this book to a friend of mine that was having difficulties in his marriage. Although he had been through normal pre-marriage counselling he said it was surprising the things he didn't know. My opinion is that it should be included in any pre-marriage counselling; there is a lot here will be surprising and useful whether you are married or not.

Stellar Study on Sexual Issues, Through the Fathers

I suspect this topic/title would strike most -- even Christians, even many Orthodox Christians -- as perhaps dry or dull, but it's the furthest thing from, provided you have even a slight interest in the subject matter. The patristic understanding of these and related issues (sex, contraception, eschatology etc.) would strike the vast majority of modern Christians as peculiar and idiosyncratic, if not crazy, but it's the genuine teaching of the Orthodox Church even to this day. On its face, marriage and virginity seems like a narrow area of study, but from the Orthodox/patristic view, these are the only two authentic modes of Christian life itself, so it's actually an expansive topic. Father Josiah brilliantly examines this through the teachings of St. John Chrysostom, as he is the Church Father whose extant corpus has the most breadth and depth, thereby touching on many topics from many angles, and because his thought is reflective of the patristic period and in concert with other Fathers. A welcome and direly needed antidote to the ever-expanding feminized and/or liberalized Christianity that abounds

VALUE THE GIFT

A few days before Christmas nine-year-old Marcel and his family are driving to their new house--an old farm deep in the snowy woods, then get lost. Luckily they find an old hotel which at first seemed to be closed. Marcel is fascinated by their quaint but kindly host, Pappy, who promises to provide them with directions to their destination the next day.
But the man mysteriously disappears, leaving them only an unsigned, unaddressed Christmas card, which has no words--just a curious sketch of the woods. Marcel gradually realizes that this card is a kind of map to their new home, yet it is much more than that. It is a Magic card, which changes to reflect conditions of the real world outside--of time, light and location.
Still Marcel experiences alternating fear and peace in the days preceding the Christian holiday, as a result of the card's shifting hints. The family of four is confused by the mysterious fire glowing in the old cabin; did they just stumble upon a meeting and inadvertantly drive the people away? Secular and sacred connotations combine to make a fascinating, enjoy-in-one-sitting read. Will Marcel ever see his beloved Pappy again--just who and what is he anyway? A literary chiaroscuro where the Light combats the Darkness and a young boy tries to choose the right path and make the best "trade."

My introduction to Paul Theroux

Many years ago on a trip to England I found the Penguin / Puffin version of A Christmas Card in a bookstore and bought it for my children, who were living in Denmark and visiting their grandparents in Maine every other summer. They don't seem to remember the story, but I read it to classes every year at Christmas as a high school English teacher in Denmark and my students loved it as much as I did after they got over the fact that Teacher was reading to them, just like in grade school.

It was my introduction to the wonderful world of Paul Theroux. I've since read many (but not all) of his books. I didn't enjoy the more recent novels, but I particularly loved A Kingdom By The Sea, as I, too, have enjoyed walking in England.

This is a magical story - about magic and imagination and light and life, which is what Theroux always writes about. Get a copy for your children or grandchildren, but be sure to read it out loud to them, one chapter a day, to spread out the suspense!

Wonderfully descriptive, riveting, and enchanted storytelling

I remember reading this book decades ago around the age of 10. We cleaned out the garage this past summer and found a box of my old books. This one caught my eye and I put it aside, wanting to share it with my 5 y.o. this Christmas, which I am. We have been reading 2 chapters a night before bed, then discussing what we have read. I have a very bright child and he caught on quickly to the magic of the card, he made the connection of the card being light in the day and dark at night. We are down to the last 2 chapters and he is trying to guess the magic of the story, I almost hate for it to end. The book, and the season, has bonded us closer together. It is books like these that unite the old and the young, as although us older ones may have already read it as a child, it is like reliving it all over again through the eyes of your child. An absolutely amazing book that teaches us the magic and wonder of the Christmas holiday.

Not for the faint at heart

This book is a good read for the serious student who wants to know about the Messiah. It tells many statements which do cover the who, what, why, how, where and when that you won't find in a Christian book store. The book was worth the read but is not for the faint at heart or one who can not take the good and leave aside what is esoteric; there is much more kabalistic information in the book than required but if one can just take the information and keep the good and put aside the questionable or difficult to understand, then this book will be a good purchase. Again, I don't know of any other books (in English) which have this much information.

Mashiach is not a book to be read only once or in one sitting, especially if you are new or not well connected to the concepts discussed. Authors who value citing their sources and providing an open hand to explaining words and terminology for the layman gets an A+ from me. Kramer does a great job bridging the gaps. The book will help open your mind to the sensitivities of your purpose in this life, turning the mundane acts and encounters to something far more fulfilling.

This book is as good as it gets when it comes to explaining the function of Mashaich and its probably not what you have been taught is Sunday School! The "Messiah" is a completely Jewish concept and to really understand the function of "Messiah" you have to leave that church stuff behind and grab a hold of the tzits of a Jew...and learn some truth!
