Can you imagine changing your whole life to go follow Jesus?

This is a remarkable book, about an amazing woman, who serves an astounding God.

Imagine giving up everything to go serve the poorest of the poor.

Perhaps because of my own phase of life, I found it even more impressive and touching that she made this choice in the second half of life. It is easier to make a bold choice when you are young and have less to lose, when you are not yet thinking about retirement plans. It is almost incomprehensible to make such a choice when you really understand the consequences. And yet that very hesitation on my own part shows the limitations of my own faith. So I found myself oddly jealous while reading this--jealous of the overwhelming faith that was able to simply say "yes".

For all the blather we see in the news about Christianity and politics and what people are for or against, this book cuts through the sound bites and the posturing and the bloviating and the arguing and simply shows Christian love in action. Best of all, it does it with a simple and honest tone. You don't feel like you are reading a book about a martyr, you feel like you are reading an adventure story.

I will be interested to read more from this author in the future, and if I can add a tiny criticism, I hope future books will be better edited. Don't let that put you off, she is an excellent writer, but even good writers need good editors and proofreaders.

From the Author
Over the years, I have casually collected material from a myriad of sources that elucidated what can be known of what is called the "historical Jesus". My interest in the facts of Jesus' life (and the authenticity of his pronouncements) long predated my introduction to the non-Christian scriptures of the East, such as Buddhism, Taoism, and Advaita. After all, I was raised (and baptized at 13) as a Baptist. 

When I first came across a translation of The Gospel of Thomas, I wanted to determine how that testament of Jesus' "unknown" sayings contributed to the overall picture of who Jesus was, and what he had taught. 

A friend, a (now deceased) professor who retired to Australia, asked me to write for him--from that unorganized file I had collected--what to me appeared to be the answer to the question of how The Gospel of Thomas informed our understanding of the historical Jesus and his message.

Originally I wrote only the section "Commentary on Verses" that is listed here in the Table of Contents, which gives my annotation on each aphorism in Thomas. 

The next question followed though: If these are authentic sayings of Jesus, why were they not in public circulation until 1945? 

And another significant question needed to be answered: Why would anyone conclude that they are authentic scriptures? 

These questions led to writing"The Fifth Gospel" material.

The value of my compilation, I feel, is that it may be of service in drawing attention to the importance of not relegating the "gnostic" Jesus to a dismissive category. There's something of invaluable significance that's been overlooked, so far, in the academic and scholarly biblical discussion. That's why this manuscript was composed.

Jesus, Thomas, Clarity

Robert Wolfe's superb book is an important contribution to the understanding of who Jesus was and what he said. Many of us who have read translations of the "Thomas Gospel" over the years have pondered how different Jesus' teachings are in the "Thomas Gospel" to what is largely attributed to him in the New Testament. This new book gives one a magnificent opportunity to delve into the "Thomas Gospel" and meet a Jesus unencombered with hierarchy, virgin births, sin & salvation and much more. I think many people will greet this book with gratitude and joy while others may feel it challenges too deeply long held beliefs within traditional Christian understanding. I urge anyone interested in these matter to buy Mr. Wolfe's book for it is beautifully written, organized, persuasive and, as stated above, deeply challenging.

Exactly what I was looking for...

After eading The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment what struck me the most in Eckhart Tolle's book was how the words of Jesus were brought to life and held a whole new meaning that they had never had for me before I was so moved that I thought that I would like someday to compile all of Jesus' words and illuminate them as Tolle had. But I no longer have to do that, because Mr. Wolfe has all ready done that for us in this enlightening book. He, in like fashion to Tolle, takes the words of The Gospel of Thomas and points to how they are, in turn, filled with pointers to the Truth of Non-Duality. And although he deals with only the 114 saying of this gospel, it is done so well that, when reading any of the Canonical Gospels one can see the pointers extant in them, not withstanding the alterations made by the early Pauline/Constantinian church, as explained in the first part of the book. For those, "with eyes to see" this book can be a great revelation and a "key" to Jesus' teachings.

Stunning

This book is a stunning exposé of the new testament. Not just about the non-cannonical Gospel of Thomas, but exposes truths about the whole new testament that I never knew. Learning when and more importantly why the books of the new testament were written and why the standard incarnation of the bible came to be was enlightening (pun intended). After reading this, my whole perspective on Christianity has changed, prompting me to disregard the religion entirely and focus on the teachings of the MAN called Jesus, who was undoubtedly enlightened.

Charles Wheelan is the author of the best-selling Naked Statistics and Naked Economics and is a former correspondent for The Economist. He teaches public policy and economics at Dartmouth College and lives in Hanover, New Hampshire, with his family.

It is a great book. Mine got stolen so Im reading the copy that the library has. It gives theoretical observations of Public Policy issues but then backs them up with real life examples. I enjoy reading it because it doesnt seem like it is a textbook when you read it but more of a explanation of commonly held collective action issues

From Chapter One, What Law is About

You have come to this school to embark upon the study of the law. Most of you have in the back of your heads an idea that as a result of that study you will become lawyers. Some of you have some notion of what it is that a lawyer does. You think of a man who tries cases before the courts. Or do you think particularly of a man to whom to turn in case, for any reason, you happen to get arrested? But what a court does, what a lawyer does in court, and what he does outside, what relationship either court or lawyer has to the law, what relation the law school has to any of these things -- around these things, I take it, there floats a pleasant haze. If it were not pleasant, you would not be here. Perhaps you would not, if there were no haze.

What I propose to do is to take up successively a series of questions. First, and today, what is this law about, which you propose to study? Second, and tomorrow, what is the machinery for going about this study; what are you going to have to do in this school and how can you best go about doing it? Third, what are the opportunities that the school offers and what are some of the ways of their solution? And lastly, how does the study of the law here bear upon the work that you will do and the life that you will live when you leave this school and go into practice?

A CLASSIC

Written over 70 years ago, Bramble Bush is still THE book recommended for students to read just prior to beginning classes or early in their first semester of law school. Be prepared to read passages over again due to the author's 1920's style of sentence composition, but also be prepared for an enjoyable 200 pages of insight into the U.S. system of common law, case /precedence law, and most importantly, advice and guidance for 1L, 2L, and 3L (law) students.

The fun is in seeing what's dated

Professor Llewellyn's distinguished collection of lectures is best used nowadays, in my opinion, as a baseline to see what has changed in the legal profession and what has not. Llewellyn's discussion of the case system is a terrific look at the judge's toolbox, but law students today cannot rely on a deep understanding of the case system to become good lawyers -- the proliferation of other forms of law, particularly statutory and administrative law, is too great. On the other hand, Llewellyn's extreme statement of the legal realist position -- still only one competing theory of law when he gave his lectures -- is now the undisputed champion of the legal discipline, and it's fascinating to travel back to a time when the author felt the need to be an apologist for it. The chapters that stand up best, in my opinion, are the ones discussing the dilemma of siding with the powerful after graduation; this is a topic that only becomes more timely as expenses rise and the pressure to join Big Law grows for new law graduates. I would especially recommend this book for casual students of legal history or jurisprudence.

Standing the test of time.....

I actually felt myself getting smarter while reading this book. Outside of just covering "technicalities" of studying law, he also offers a fascinating perspective on the study and practice of law in relation to the lawyer's life (money/finc. security as primary motive for entering legal profession.) Also interesting are his views on making/missing law review and the effect this has on 2Ls. Overall, an excellent read, time well spent, and very deserving of the word "classic."

I have recently been convinced that the King James Bible is the ONLY One translation that I can depend on. This book is a brilliant help to understand more in depth about the differences between the translations and why.

Great collection of evidence!

Dr. Moorman has done a masterful job collecting the evidence to support the superiority of the Received Text and KJV! He shows in the 454 pages that the wealth of support comes from the manuscripts, church fathers, and different versions to testify to, again, the vast superiority of our Received Text as given in the KJV. This refutes the claim that there is not good support to hold to the superiority of that text. It is very technical reading but worth the time if you need proof instead of repeating old worn-out expressions that you cannot rely upon the manuscript support for the KJV. I highly recommend this book.

Seemingly a lot of information, but...

...the way it is formatted and organized, it is very time consuming to understand it. It specifically uses the NIV to contrast the KJV as far as what passages are being removed or altered from the Bible, since it is the worst translation; except for The Message, which is considered a paraphrase. From a publishing point of view, a lot of empty space here that could have been utilized to make this better. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of information here that goes a long way in proving that the Vaticanus and Sinaiticus Codex are not the oldest manuscripts- but it takes some digging to get to.

Okay but can be improved...

I have to agree with a previous review about the poor editing. Some of the steps could be clarified a lot by just adding a simple screenshot of the menu or the button. For an introduction to Inventor this book is perfect for the price you pay and even though some instructions are unclear, you can figure out what the outcome should be. Some tutorials feels like the author took shortcuts and left out steps because it was too much effort to write the steps again. I feel that practice makes perfect and covering a topic in one tutorial doesn't mean you have mastered it. So instead of just guiding you through which tools to use to achieve the desired results, the author just leaves it out completely. There is also not a lot of explanation on to why certain settings or tools are used. There are A LOT of conflicts in which plane to use when sketching, somewhere the X,Y and Z axis' got mixed up.
A bit of a frustrating read - but still educational.

Poor Editing

Very very poor editing. A thirteen year old could have wrote better. Some directions aren't correct. (Eg. It tells you top left corner but it's actually top right corner.) some sentences stop in the middle, therefore you don't know what the sentence is trying to say.

Great for College, not High School Freshman

This book is an okay resource. I brought it to help some of the students in my class practice CAD without me having to be over them the whole time. After reading through it I found that it was written a little over their heads (9th grade) and had less diagrams then I would expect from a tutorial book.

This book however is great for an upper classmen or college student trying to learn at home about how to use inventor. It does give more information than the other text I use, but it isn't accessible by my students.
