Sometimes pioneer life is hard, but Laura and her folks are always busy and happy in their new little house.

About the Author

Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867–1957) was born in a log cabin in the Wisconsin woods. With her family, she pioneered throughout America’s heartland during the 1870s and 1880s, finally settling in Dakota Territory. She married Almanzo Wilder in 1885; their only daughter, Rose, was born the following year. The Wilders moved to Rocky Ridge Farm at Mansfield, Missouri, in 1894, where they established a permanent home. After years of farming, Laura wrote the first of her beloved Little House books in 1932. The nine Little House books are international classics. Her writings live on into the twenty-first century as America’s quintessential pioneer story.

Not as good as previous version

I teach 5th grade and I purchased these books to complete my class set of these books. This new version is missing all of the wonderful sketches that made Laura's books famous. Why? The font is also smaller and the page numbers are different, making it difficult for the kids with this version to follow along. I'm most upset though at the lack of the illustrations that children have come to love since Laura wrote these books. Disappointing. Get the older version (without the photograph on the cover) if you can get it.

I bought 3 of these books for my daughter's classroom last year and they loved the book. There were no torn pages, the binding and the cover were all intact, with minor or no bending. The product was useful and appreciated. It was shipped in a timely manner and arrived just in time for the students to use.

The long-overdue second edition of O'Reilly's Linux Network Administrator's Guide, by Olaf Kirch and Terry Dawson, still sports the cowboy colophon, suggesting that netadmins have retained their Lone Ranger personas. While life for a sysadmin has improved over the years with the introduction of the ./Configure utility and build-less rpm distributions, network building and maintenance is still a vast prairie, in its complexity growing faster than the availability of tools and documentation to tame it. Linux document libraries are filled with disparate, obsolete, and/or redundant How-Tos for multiple Ethernet cards, bridging, cable modems, DHCP, Samba, ISDN, DSL, and laptop Ethernet card peculiarities.

Sadly, the recycling of the cowboy motif indicates a deeper problem with the second edition. While authors Kirch and Dawson have expanded and updated Kirch's original text, they give scant attention to any of the paradigm shifts that have occurred in Linux networking since 1993. Strangely, the authors have retained much material on core technologies of diminishing importance in the era of small ISP-connected networks. While PPP and Chat are still relevant for ISP connections, such protocols as UUCP, SLIP, dip, and PLIP are largely of historical interest. Discussions of packet routing are not browsable, and there is no practical presentation of the configuration of routing for multiple Ethernet cards, which the small-network Linux market needs. The showstopper is the absence of any discussion of configuring DHCP, DSL, cable modems, or Samba. When the authors blithely indicate in their preface the growing importance of these areas, one gathers that this book was written in 1997 or earlier.

Still, in the nearly 500 pages of earnest effort, Kirch and Dawson expand on such infrastructural basics as TCP/IP, NIS, and DNS. Discussions of firewalls and IP masquerading are genuinely new, and the authors include an up-to-date section featuring firewall implementations in kernels as recent as 2.4. Such tried-and-true utilities as SMTP and Sendmail are covered in detail, although out-of-the-box implementations haven't posed serious problems for years. The five chapters on reading and serving network news are positively excessive.

Perhaps it's time for the cowboy to come back to the ranch to see how the world has changed. --Peter Leopold

About the Author

Olaf Kirch has a degree in Mathematics from Technische Universitaet Darmstadt. He presently works as a UNIX programmer for a company producing a CAD system. A Linux fan for a couple of years now, he is amazed at the pace its development continues to progress. For relaxation, Olaf likes painting, drawing, and reading (anything from nineteenth century poetry to detective novels and Japanese manga). He likes to spend time outdoors whenever possible. He doesn't have a driver's license (never had one), so he goes about most of his daily routine by bicycle. When he gets away from his keyboard for more than a few days, he likes to go mountain-walking.

Terry Dawson is an amateur radio operator and long time Linux enthusiast. He is the author of a number of network related HOWTO documents for the Linux Documentation Project, co-author the 2nd edition of O'Reilly's Linux Network Administrators Guide and is an active participant in a number of other Linux projects. Terry has 15 years professional experience in telecommunications and is currently engaged in network management research in the Telstra Research Laboratories.

Not a good introduction to the topic

I recently started working in a research lab where some network administration knowledge is necessary, so I checked out this book. It really isn't good if you're just trying to get an introduction to the material, it skips over a lot and assumes you know too much. However, now that I am experienced in the subject I have to say that the book isn't very good as a network administrator's reference in general either.

You may learn a few things from this book but it isn't very useful for someone new to the topic looking for an introduction nor someone experienced looking for a reference.

A really good introduction to Linux Networking

My one major regret was not reading this sooner. :) I found that this book provides a really nice easy to understand introduction to the different networking aspects on Linux. I had read O'Reilly's TCP/IP Networking first (by Craig Hunt), and it had a great deal of detail. If I had read this first, I think I would have understand that book more so. Nevertheless, both are essential if you want do networking on Linux. My only reason for giving this book 4 stars was the excessive amount of information regarding News servers. I think a chapter or two would have sufficed, and then include some final thoughts and some trouble-shooting. Still, I learned quite a lot, (even on the News server chapters) and I think you will too.

This terrifying memoir recounts author Daphne Scholinski's three years spent in mental institutions for, among other things, Gender Identity Disorder. Daphne came from a busted home: Mom left to go to college and become a feminist and an artist; Dad stayed home with two daughters, the elder of whom, Daphne, he often beat. When Daphne started acting up at school, her shrinks decided to put her away. Her family, not knowing how to handle her, agreed. Because she was a tomboy who wore jeans and T-shirts and didn't act enough like a girl, her treatment, in addition to talk therapy, isolation, and drugs, required her to wear makeup, walk with a swing in her hips, and pretend to be obsessed with boys. This sounds awful enough, but when you realize that the confinement and treatment took place from 1981 to 1984, it's absolutely chilling. This book is both a powerful indictment of Gender Identity Disorder treatment and an inspiring testament of one person's survival.

About the Author
Daphne Scholinski is an artist who lives in San Francisco. She is also an activist who speaks at colleges and universities about psychiatric abuse of gay and lesbian teenagers. She was a speaker at the NGO Conference on Women in Beijing, and her story has appeared on ABC-TV?S 20/20.

love, fear and so much more

Recently optioned for a feature film, this fascinating memoir is much more than the story of a journey through the mental health system but deals with the confusing time of adolescence, parental challenges, love, fear and so much more. Very timely; let's hope that today's world is growing more understanding. Only time will tell.

Sometime in the Eighties

"Mr. Bowen. Is it true that they used to put gay people in mental institutions?"
"We," I quietly correct her.
"What?"
"It's our society. So, it's we." She thinks on that for a moment, then gets back to her question.
"Well, is it really true?"
"I'm pretty sure. At least, I've heard that before."
"When did they stop?" We google a couple of phrases and stumble on Scholinski's poignant memoir.
"The eighties," I finally say. It looks like we stopped sometime in the eighties.
"Oh...so it was a while ago," she says, seeming satisfied with my answer.
Sometime in the eighties. For a thirteen-year-old, that was a while ago. It gives her some cushion. Puts some distance between her generation and a great travesty of justice. And ethics. And decency. But for a forty-year-old man, it's not the case. The eighties are still pretty vivid. As an NYU grad from the late eighties, all I can think about are some of my young, gay friends that came to the village as more than just students. Refugees, really. Terribly misunderstood refugees looking for some asylum.
Scholinski's memoir is an excellent look at such pathetic attempts at therapy such as having the author gain points and privileges for wearing make-up and dresses. Daphne's writing style is easy and conversational and makes a tough subject a very easy read. It was never a book I intended to read, but I'm grateful for having stumbled onto it. Simply put, "The Last Time I Wore A Dress," is a satisfying memoir.

I heard this author speak a number of years ago at a festival called Estrofest. I remembered this book recently after talking about how gender, especially non-binary genders and trans folks, are treated within healthcare. I highly recommend this book to the many trans folks who have been told there is something wrong with them for being who they are.

This is read by one reader. I was hoping that there would have been multiple readers. The story is understandable for Spanish language learners and at a slow enough pace (without obvious pauses.) A little dry though.

Thomas D. Grant is an academic and practicing lawyer specializing in international dispute settlement and public international law. Notable cases on which he has served as counsel or assistant-to-counsel include the Temple Interpretation case (Cambodia v. Thailand), Macedonia v. Greece, and the Kosovo advisory case. He is a fellow of Wolfson College in the University of Cambridge; a Senior Associate of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law; and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). Dr Grant is author of several books, has published many articles in refereed journals, and has contributed chapters to numerous multi-author volumes. A most thorough examination

A MOST THOROUGH EXAMINATION FOR AND AGAINST RUSSIA’S INVASION OF THE UKRAINE: FROM THE STANDPOINT OF INTERNATIONAL LAW

An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

This is a highly topical book on the Ukraine with the continued instability in many parts of the old Soviet Union written by a brilliant contemporary expert, Thomas D Grant of Wolfson College who has made some the most interesting and pertinent current comments on this serious conflict.

And Grant does make it clear that “the conclusions and opinions in the book are mine and do not necessarily reflect those of any of the persons or institutions mentioned”! Yes, and we are very glad that Grant has shared his substantive and balanced analysis of what has been going on in Ukraine with us at a time when there is so much confusion over “the facts”.

Whilst in the common law jurisdictions the rule of law does rule supreme, it is not the case elsewhere unfortunately especially if those who run certain regimes continue to have no respect for some basic human rights so international lawyers need to refer to works such as “Aggression Against Ukraine” which counter acts some of the blatant lies which currently do the political rounds.

So, we welcome Grant’s informative work “Aggression Against Ukraine” which marks a stunning shift in attitudes in this 400 page book of well researched detail.

Ever since the end of the Second World War, it had been “recognized and understood that the borders of States must not be the object of forcible change by other States”- but just how enforceable is such a concept or ‘agreement’?

The Russians has now revived long-buried historical claims—and it prosecutes them by dint of arms so nothing much has really changed in terms of their foreign policy and its attack on the international rule of law. From the annexation of Crimea in March 2014 and the subsequent armed incursions in eastern Ukraine under colour of separatist movements in Donetsk and Luhansk, the challenge is not just one State's territorial integrity, but what outs in jeopardy the general settlement on which international law for almost three generations has relied upon.

So this is the settlement which has enabled human rights and modern institutions of international law to flourish. And it is Russia's unfortunate domestic rejection of human rights and its new geopolitics of territorial seizure here that should be seen not in isolation but as connected foreign policy developments, and thereby a challenge to international law and global public order at large.

For these reasons alone, it is our view that Grant’s book deserves a full read with his observations for the future clearly noted by the democratic countries of Europe, and not a group of serial despots who pick and choose what parts of human rights law they would like to follow since the creation of the Convention after World War Two: President Putin please note!

What we have lost

This is an essential study of arguably the most important international law case of recent history, that surrounding Russia's annexation of Crimea. Amidst all the armchair geopolitical cant on Ukraine spewed by politicians, Grant's sober tone is surprisingly refreshing. He does not shout his points, but argues them with quiet urgency, grounding his critique of Russian aggression not in political posturing but squarely and soundly in the realities of international law. Unlike many GOP Presidential hopefuls hopping on the anti-Putin bandwagon, Grant eschews cheap shots against the Obama administration as he lays out his alternative vision of what responsible western stewardship of international order over the past year or two would have looked like. This makes his critique all the more devastating, as we come to realize what the world has lost in Ukraine.

Prohibition against forcible change of boundares, not against use of force as cornerstone of international order

This book makes an important and cogent argument. In a nutshell, it contends -- persuasively -- that he prohibition against the use of force is NOT the foundation rule of the post-1945 legal order, but rather that the prohibition against forcible change of boundaries is. This may not seem to an important distinction, but Grant lays out why it is quite significant. Moreover, many nominal experts overlook it, and that is a source of some dangerous confusion and misperception in international disputes and conflicts. Grant does a superb job in analyzing this fundamental point using the case of Ukraine and Russia.
