A good, concise account of basic ethical ideas.

Ethics A Beginners Guide by Peter Cave is one of a series of Beginners Guides books. Cave is a lecturer in philosophy and provides a basic overview of various ethical perspectives in chapters on utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics, religion, and existentialism. The remaining chapters cover topics related to these ideas including whether morality is just an illusion, applying ethics to life and death situations, the rights of the state relative to the individual, and how to fit ethics into your personal life. Each topic is covered in enough detail to give you a basic understanding of the concepts for that particular philosophical position. At the same time the relative brevity of the book does not allow for any in-depth analysis and some of the examples are not particularly helpful. Still, this book can be a good beginning for anyone interested in learning more about ethics and moral philosophy.

Super introduction to etiquette and behavior

Practical and explicit book for boys and young men to study how to be gentlemen. It explains not only why a behavior is appropriate, but why another behavior is inappropriate and harmful to others or yourself. A must read for all parents of boys in the increasingly asocial world of texting, youtubing, emailing, and facebooking.

Love This Book

We purchased this book to go through with our 10-year-old son & I ended up liking it for me.

In a time when manners and respect are nearly gone, this book helps inform a young man (or not-so-young-man) on how to conduct himself as a gentleman.

This book is an easy read and covers a wide-range of subjects & situations. It does it with a bit of humor too!

Would highly recommend this to any parent with a boy.

Good book

I gave this book to my 14 year old grandson when he graduated from 8th grade. Whenever he seems to lose his manners, I have him read a specific chapter. Things like how to say thank you. I even bought one to keep in our house so that when the grandkids visit they can read a chapter and we can discuss why manners are so important.

Easy to learn hobby

The author very patiently goes through each step involved in learning to paint on fabric. She even teaches you how to make your own stencils and stamps rather than recommending brands to purchase.

You get a list of the items requirements for a project and then she walks you through each step. This is one of the best step by step books that I have read because of all the details and how the information flows.

You don't have to be an artist to make creative and fun painted T-shirts or tote bags. All you need is the willingness to learn and to practice.

A great book for beginners!

If you've never painted on fabric before and are wondering how to get started, this book is a good place to start. Margot Krekeler's book is full of design ideas, techniques, and illustrations that can inspire you to paint on fabric. If you have a light-colored t-shirt that needs perking up, or a plain canvas tote bag you'd like to decorate, you will find lots of options here. Don't worry about perfection -- the idea is to play, experiment, and relax while you paint creatively. This is an excellent overview of fabric painting that is easy enough for budding artists from young teens to adults to enjoy.

I really like this publication

I really like this publication. For someone who works in a high stress job but has little "creative capabilities" this guide opens up a new world of possibilities. It is well laid out with clear and simple instructions. The images are perfect. I especially love the fact that an end result may be some beautiful new fashions or gifts for friends and family that have been made with love.

About the Author
Robert A. Stebbins, FRSC, is Faculty Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Calgary. He received his Ph.D. in 1964 from the University of Minnesota. Author of 30 books and monographs as well as over 150 articles and chapters in several areas of social science, his most recent works include: New Directions in the Theory and Research of Serious Leisure (Edwin Mellen, 2001), Exploratory Research in the Social Sciences (Sage, 2001), and The Organizational Basis of Leisure Participation: A Motivational Exploration (Venture Publications, 2002). Between Work and Leisure (Transaction Publishers) appeared in 2004 and Challenging Mountain Nature (Detselig), a study of three mountain hobbyist sports, will be published in fall, 2005. He is presently writing for Indiana University Press (with David Horton Smith and Michael Dover) A Dictionary of Nonprofit Terms and Concepts. Stebbins was elected Fellow of the Academy of Leisure Sciences in 1996 and, in 1999, elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

Recommended to Scientists and Graduate Students

In sixty short pages packed with career-changing insights, Stebbins lays out the goals, products, standards of rigor, and criteria for contributions-to-knowledge for exploratory research. It turns out that much of the the exciting exploratory work in my field is being published as bad theoreitcal work and worse experimental work. It is a revelation and a relief to learn that the same work could be conducted and published as robust, defensible, valuable exploratory science.

Since I encountered it a few months ago, I've recommended this book to all my colleauges and graduate students, and I have added it to my must-read list for scientific inquiry, along with Popper's "The Logic of Scientific Discovery," and Sadish, Cook, and Campbell's "Experimental and Quasiexperimental designs for Generalized Causal Inference."

What a relief!

I definitely agree with the previous reviewer: this is an amazing book. I've spent far too much time apologizing for the fact that my research can be categorized as exploratory If I get tenure, I want to start a journal called Exploratory Studies in Education. People like me would write for it and experimental researchers would read it to get ideas.
