The stepping-stone text for students with a preliminary knowledge of organic chemistry looking to move into organic synthesis research and graduate-level coursework
Organic synthesis is an advanced but important field of organic chemistry, however resources for advanced undergraduates and graduate students moving from introductory organic chemistry courses to organic synthesis research are scarce. Introduction to Strategies for Organic Synthesis is designed to fill this void, teaching practical skills for making logical retrosynthetic disconnections, while reviewing basic organic transformations, reactions, and reactivities.
Divided into seven parts that include sections on Retrosynthesis and Protective Groups; Overview of Organic Transformations; Synthesis of Monofunctional Target Molecules; Synthesis of Target Molecules with Two Functional Groups; Synthesis of Aromatic Target Molecules; Synthesis of Compounds Containing Rings; and Predicting and Controlling Stereochemistry, the book covers everything students need to successfully perform retrosynthetic analyses of target molecule synthesis.
Starting with a review of functional group transformations, reagents, and reaction mechanisms, the book demonstrates how to plan a synthesis, explaining functional group analysis and strategic disconnections. Incorporating a review of the organic reactions covered, it also demonstrates each reaction from a synthetic chemist's point of view, to provide students with a clearer understanding of how retrosynthetic disconnections are made.
Including detailed solutions to over 300 problems, worked-through examples and end-of-chapter comprehension problems, Introduction to Strategies for Organic Synthesis serves as a stepping stone for students with an introductory knowledge of organic chemistry looking to progress to more advanced synthetic concepts and methodologies.

Review
“Finally, my overall impression of the book is that it will serve well as a quick reference or starting point for an undergraduate researcher or new PhD student in organic synthesis. It is essentially a back-to-basics textbook and there may even be something there for the odd academic who needs some inspiration when handed a new teaching assignment in an undergraduate subject in organic synthesis.” (Angewandte Chemie, 1 September 2012)
“I will certainly be recommending it to my own students.” (ChemMedChem, 1 January 2013)
“Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-and upper-division undergraduates.” (Choice, 1 November 2012)

Great Text for Advanced Organic Chemistry Students!
By Daniel E. Levy
Having a strong interest in encouraging the study of organic chemistry, I am always looking for tools to bring logic to a field that is frequently associated with frustration and a dependence on memorization. As Laurie Starkey points out, a typical undergraduate degree in chemistry does not provide the breadth of experience and understanding to qualify one as an organic chemist. When I entered graduate school, this fact was all too clear - not for me, but amogst my peers. My solution was to work through graduate level texts to gain more theoretical experience in planning synthetic routes. For the undergraduate, suitable texts were not available until now.
"Introduction to Strategies for Organic Synthesis" is an outstanding text that builds upon a mechanistic understanding of organic reactions and teaches the art of retrosynthetic analysis and synthesis design. The book is presented in seven parts. Each part focuses on key themes that collectively unite creating a foundation of understanding that can truly prepare an undergraduate for more in depth coursework at the graduate level. Furthermore, each part contains problem sets and solutions. The Table of Contents provides an easy guide to the themes of each chapter and the detailed Index provides easy identification of key topics.
Working through each chapter, students are presented protecting group strategies, definitions of nucleophiles and electrophiles and various oxidation and reduction reactions. Section III discusses the syntheses of various functional groups and their relative reactivities. The synthesis of compounds with multiple functional groups is addressed in part IV, aromatic target structures are described in part V and preparation of cyclic compound is presented in part VI. Finally, part VII focuses on predicting and controlling stereochemistry. While all of these topics are touched upon in a good introductory organic chemistry class, an appropriate depth of understanding cannot be communicated in a single year.
In summary, "Introduction to Strategies for Organic Synthesis" is an excellent text for advanced organic chemistry courses. It is also an outstanding tool for independent study in preparation for graduate level courses. I truly wish this book was available when I was a student.

Organic Chemistry Level 3 ~
By Christopher Barrett
This text is targeted to students entering graduate programs that would be needing additional reference for Organic Chemistry compound synthesis. In reading the text, it was a little more advanced than my college Organic Chemistry text (used for Organic Chem I and II). Much of the information is covered in Organic Chem, but this text takes the formulas one step further. I did find that having a firm understanding of hard Chemistry helps as well, at least through Chemistry II (college level). Lab experience is also highly recommended.
The text is chart, diagram, and graph heavy and NOT text heavy. This is actually a relief, since much of the knowledge required has been hopefully retained from Organic Chem classes. The emphasis here is not to learn the nature of the reactions, but to diagram the various reactions and illustrate individual examples. An example is a section covering synthesis of alcohols by the Grignard reaction. So where Organic Chemistry showed the nature of a fermentation reaction (sugars to alcohols) in a rather broad way, this text will show each step of the process (which is much more complex than it seems at first). This is just an example mind you.
Your professor will require whichever text they prefer (of course), but for those students with some leeway in their graduate programs would be encouraged to look into this text. The sections covered are:
Retrosynthesis and Protective Groups
Overview of Organic Transformations
Synthesis of Monofunctional Target Molecules
Synthesis of Target Molecules with Two Functional Groups
Synthesis of Aromatic Target Molecules
Synthesis of Compounds Containing Rings
Predicting and Controlling Stereochemistry
This is a great resource text for students entering the realm of Organic Synthesis.

Superb preparation for graduate organic synthesis courses
By Wile E. Chemist
Introduction to Strategies for Organic Synthesis is a fantastic way to review organic chemistry in preparation for graduate school or for entry into the synthetic organic chemistry industry. There is a great difference between the organic chemistry that is taught at the undergraduate level, and what is expected to be known by beginning graduate students. Undergraduate courses and textbooks generally emphasize a functional group approach, while graduate school, and industry, tends to be concerned about synthesis- the actual construction of target molecules. This book will help the upper-level undergraduate or beginning graduate student reorient their thinking about organic chemistry, and the use of organic reactions in synthetic strategies.
This book is a very clear, and student-friendly review of organic reactions, and is a lucid introduction to the concept of retrosynthesis. Each chapter has an extensive set of practice problems, and answers to all problems are included-no need to buy a solutions manual! This book would be very suitable for an upper level undergraduate, or a first year graduate course. It is probably also the best book around for self study. The information is presented in such a clear conversational tone that one feels like the professor is in the room with you.
Introduction to Strategies for Organic Synthesis is a must for anyone contemplating graduate school in organic chemistry. I recently earned a master's degree and wish that a book like this had been available before I started. It would have made life so much easier! Read this book, do the problems, check your answers, and you will be ready to take your graduate-level organic synthesis courses with confidence in a solid foundation.
