John Paul Lederach has spent 15 years providing training and supporting peacebuilding in Colombia, Somalia, The Philippines, Nicaragua, and Northern Ireland. Director of Eastern Mennonite University's Conflict Transformation Program, he has conducted numerous research projects and published extensively.

Conflict transformation: crisis intervention and long-term radical strategy integrated into peacebuilding

One of Lederach's most useful revelations in assessing the work of third-party nonviolent interventionists -- from humanitarian workers to nonviolent direct-action trainers -- is the idea of an integrated framework for peacebuilding. Instead of always focusing on either crisis intervention or a future-to-come; instead of focusing on either a local issue or only visioning about addressing root causes, Lederach explores the role of transformation -- how to get from crises to radical change.

"We must ... think about the design of social change in time-units of decades, in order to link crisis management and long-term, future-oriented time frames," he writes. "We must understand crisis issues as connected to systemic roots ... [and] recognize the integrative potential of middle-range leaders, who by their locus within the affected population may be able to cultivate relationships and pursue the design of social change at a subsystem level."

This is a vital book for anyone exploring the theory and practice of nonviolent social change, as well as practitioners searching for a framework for their direct action praxis.

Truly cutting-edge

Lederach's work stands at the forefront of the emergent field of conflict transformation study. A professor at Eastern Mennonnite University, he also has extensive field experience. In "Building Peace", he focuses upon the necessity of constructing relationships across multiple social levels, de-emphasizing the role of political elites, and instead focusing both upon mid-level elites (bureaucrats, intellectuals, "influential" persons) and grassroots-level activism. He also stresses the need to develop long-range objectives, to delink expectations of short-term results from questions of involvement, and the need for implementation of training programmes to create what might be termed a "culture of peace" within the society: trained mediators indigenous to the society. In doing this, the hope is that the "parachute" problem of credibility (the idea that mediators are dropped from the above---IGO/foreign gouvernment, etc---and have no particular attachment to the conflict) may be reduced, and transformation of the conflict may be initiated.
Lederach's work is exceptionally lucid, and he draws upon a smorgasbord of substantive examples. Highly recommended.

i found this book to be very interesting particularly for people who are interested in how conflicts influence identity. it does not only provide theoretical analysis but also provides a framework for action in order to build peace in communities affected by internal conflict that involves identity issues.

Fun from so many perspectives

This is one strangely, amazingly, delightful book. Turin's writing and his metaphors, his incredibly clever mix of high and pop culture and science are just priceless - I have never encountered anything like it. Although, full disclosure - I am a chemist, and I do wonder how much a reader who has not had some exposure to organic chemistry could appreciate it. But then again, half of his cultural references probably went right over my head so hopefully anyone not too science-phobic would get enough to have a great time with this book.

Now, a bit more wonky:
Turin did a fantastic job of convincing me that "molecular shape" cannot solely determine scent, as is, I think, widely accepted. I think this highlights a phenomenon that I have never heard discussed - scientists tend to accept as true whatever is the best theory available for any given purpose. The good ones are happy to take a better theory if it comes along, but until then, we go with what we've got - and sweep the dirt under the rug. We find it easier to admit we were wrong than that we are clueless.

SPOILER ALERT: if you are a scientist who plans to read this book, maybe stop reading at this point and please return after you read the book....
Unfortunately, Turin's own theory is lots of fun but, ironically, maybe an even better illustration of the problem of ignoring facts that don't fit the theory. If vibrational frequencies played an important role in olfaction, wouldn't extensive isotopic substitution completely change a molecule's smell? But the converse, when isotopic substitution does alter smell somewhat, does not argue that vibrational frequencies play any role, at least of the type he suggests. Isotopic substitution can have lots of subtle effects - including on binding - unrelated to the "spectroscopy" in Turin's theory. So, even after hearing only Turin's side of the story, I am convinced that the mainstream community is right about him being wrong. On the other hand he may also be right about them being wrong - and I'm sure his work is a lot more entertaining than theirs!

Follow-up: I just perused the paper by Turin et al. www.pnas.org/cgi/doi/10.1073/pnas.1012293108 PNAS | March 1, 2011 | vol. 108 | no. 9 | 3797-3802 The claim that "flies trained to discriminate against the normal or deuterated isotopes of a compound, selectively avoid the corresponding isotope of a different odorant" is very impressive! The paper seems like beautiful and important work, and even if the molecular vibration-sensing theory is wrong, they surely seem to be on to something.

Fun book that describes the history and chemistry of perfumes!

Luca Turin has produced a wonderful volume on the world of perfume and the chemistry behind it.

The pages are packed with personal stories and wonderfully refreshing insights from Luca Turin's decades in the perfume business.

The material is very approachable, and I learned a lot reading the book.

One caveat, while this did not remove any stars for me, some people might be upset by his premise that we smell fragrances based on a complex vibrational analysis using quantum effects in the olfactory sensors.

I'm not convinced, but that did not spoil the book for me.

My favorite part of the book was the description of the various base scent categories and the types of molecules that made up the family of scents.

Fun writeup by a perfume fan but watch out for big science & conceptual errors--this is author's passion project, not fact.

The hardcover is different from the paper back--some typographical errors fixed. But for big science buffs looking for sound facts, there seems to be quite a few chemistry errors and invalid scientific concepts contained that haven't yet been corrected.

For the random perfume and scent buff, this could be a curious tease into the science. However, for trained perfumery professionals looking for sound science and information, this is NOT the book for you--as I personally discovered. Turin claims that ‘‘reading
all that matters in structure-odour relations takes a few months’’ is a gross underestimate and could explain the confusion caused by some of the chemistry errors. Its also important to remember that the author is a fan of fragrance but admits early that he has never had any chemistry training when talking about the "science of smelling."

I admire his passion and enjoyed hearing his vibrational theory (as that is more his expertise) but just a warning out to those looking for validated information based on training or experience

Every Christ follower Needs this info

Hagin's books continue to free my mind an soul from thing, spirits, and demons that try and bind me, but most of all I'm learning the Most important thing. I'm in chains, heartbroken, suffering,sad,or under addictions only because of my own mind!!! My own free will, and worldly mind is under its own attack, the good Lord taught Hagin these Truths that set him free since 17 and kept the race of endurance thru faith in Jesus Christ. Just as Moses spirit is with us here on earth, so is Hagin's spirit, with Jesus leading the way with his mighty angels helping fight off spiritual demons. WE HAVE BEEN JUST GIVEN FREEDOM FROM JESUS IF YOU ARE READING THIS, AND TAKING NOTES, NOW LETS GATHER BELIEVERS AND GO SAVE SOME SOULS, GLORY TO GOD !!!!

Prayer Secrets

If you are a student of the Bible or just beginning to study scriptures you will love this book. Dr. Hagin is one of the greatest prophets ever put on this earth, and in this book he writes in a straight forward, easy to understand fashion. If I were in an end times scenario this book would be a definite part of my bug-out kit. Excellent read!

What a book

Reading this book was a JOY. What a man of God. Not only was it interesting to read but so much good stuff. Took lots of notes as besides being a good read it is like a Bible Study ( amazingly wonderful study I might add) I have started utilizing the information in this book and it has really made my prayer time more effective and more focused. I would highly recommend the book just for the storyline that it follows but I do not think you could read it and not find useful information that will advance your prayer life

Loved it!

I really enjoyed this book, it was hard to put down. I think the author captured the wicked personality of the investigator as well as the sensitivity, sweetness and revenge of the young girl perfectly. Always amazes me for a male to write the thoughts and feelings that would go through a woman/girl's mind and do it well. Thanks Mr. McCarter for writing a wonderful book!

The voice of a vanished England speaks from the pages of Winston Churchill's evocative memoir of his first 30 years (1874-1904). The young Churchill inhabits a world in which men fight like hell in meaningless colonial wars--India, Egypt, South Africa--soldiering across the imperial map then extending the hand of friendship to their erstwhile enemy as if they were schoolmates at Harrow. Yet Churchill, born into a privileged family, was not an uncritical supporter of the Victorian status quo. He himself loathed Harrow; an especially amusing chapter skewers the school's emphasis on an irrelevant classical education and rote learning. A firm Tory, he considered himself a friend of the working class, and in 1899 campaigned for parliament with a Socialist colleague. Looking back from his vantage point of 1930, Churchill expresses the most attractive values of the English aristocracy--honor, loyalty, fair play--without giving the impression he wants to live in the past. The book's appeal also stems from its magisterial but colloquial prose. Anyone familiar with recordings of Churchill's rousing speeches during Word War II will hear in their minds' ears that growling timbre and unmistakably patrician accent as they read. An amusing and inspiring read

What surprised me most about this book was the humour. I expected the familiar story of our greatest leader's early life, I expected an insightful account of Britain in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, I expected a stirring tale of a young man who was a practical adventurer just as much as politician and author. I didn't expect to laugh out loud regularly for much of the story.

If you've seen the film "Young Winston", based on this book, you will be familiar with some of the events. Other programmes and books have adequately explained his war leadership and his contribution to many serious political issues. However, the films and documentaries I have seen fail to capture the mischievous spirit communicated through this book.

This a fascinating study of a bygone age, when Britain maintained a great empire, when most politicians took the title Lord, and when politics and army officership were sports for those of independent means. Interestingly despite his aristocratic bloodline Churchill's family was not particularly wealthy and some of the most poignant lessons stem from this.

Sometimes the sentiments in the book appear bloodthirsty or imperialistic, but you have to realise that at least part of the time Churchill is writing satirically, reflecting common values which you suspect he did not always share himself. When he is sincerely expressing his own serious ideals it is usually easy to detect.

These beliefs link both his skilful analysis of historical events, and Churchill's account of his own development. For example he explains the British government's failure to be magnanimous after the early victories of the Boer war as the reason that a relatively fast-moving and honourable conflict descended into "shocking evils" on both sides. The same failing is shown as a prime force in the leftward drift of Churchill's own politics.

Churchill was a great writer, but it's instructive to learn that his facility with English developed largely because he was judged early on to be too dim to cope with Latin and Greek. The classics loss was our gain, the legacy including both Churchill's great deeds and great writing.

The last chapter is slightly disappointing, with Churchill's early parliamentary career an anticlimax, and the story stops rather than ending on a major event. That apart, the pace, interest and humour are consistent throughout.

This book was written in 1930, when Churchill was already 56, but in the "wilderness years" before he regained high office and led Britain through the Second World War. It is interesting to speculate whether the book would have been very different if it were written either much earlier or later.

If you want adventure, read this book. If you want to understand a great man, read this book. If you want to do both and have a good laugh, read this book.

A fantastic era gone forever.

Churchill has always been a most incredible character. This autobiography of the early years of his life is so well written, humorous and insightful that I could not put it down.
Churchill is to most people the cigar chomping leader pictured during the blitz. To see him as a young cavalry officer leading the last charge of the British Empire boggles the mind.
This is a must read.

Another world

This is my first reading of Churchill. What a wonderful writer. His stories of a period long gone today of the army and the Polo teams, his early experiences in politics and his efforts to get to every battle so as to not miss any of the excitement are inspiring.

Want to "get" millennials? Read this book

A spot on guide to understanding the next wave of customers, consumers and employees.

In working for a firm that creates ideas for global brands, there are two constant conversations about target audiences that emerge daily: Millennials and Moms. Well three if you include Millennial Moms. If that's not enough reason to read this book, the challenge of relevantly connecting with this audience continues on a daily basis in working with, and teaching Millennials in ways that will seek to embrace their perspective, engage their passions and even challenge their notions, yet doing so to enrich their jobs, education and life experiences (else they will move on, or check out.)

Christie Garton, a Millennial herself, is the founder and publisher of UniversityChic.com, an online magazine for college women. She is also the author of best-selling college guide, "U Chic: The College Girl's Guide to Everything".

Jeff Fromm is EVP at Barkley, the largest 100% employee-owned advertising agency in the U.S. He has more than 25 years of brand marketing experience. He is the founder of Share.Like.Buy, a Millennial Insights & Marketing Conference and the lead editor of [...] Jeff also spearheaded the Millennials research partnership with Barkley, The Boston Consulting Group and Service Management Group. Led by their research, Jeff and Christine break down those in the Millennial age group into six segments. The six segments include: Hip-ennial, Millennial Mom, Anti-Millennial, Gadget Guru, Clean and Green Millennial and Old School Millennial. It is important to understand these different segments to know how to develop effective marketing approaches.

This book is more than theory and statistical research. You will find it full of insights, ideas and practical advice. It is also well written. Clear, concise, conversational language that makes it reader friendly. Plus, there are a number of thoughtful additions such as the Key Takeaways at the end of each of the seven chapters.

Wide but lopsided coverage

Paul Wilmott's book has an impressive but lopsided coverage. Paul is clearly an expert in numerical solutions of Partial Differential Equations (with a leaning towards non-linear ones, I would guess) and this topic does find useful applications in derivatives valuation. His expositions of techniques and concepts in this area is lucid and helpful. Unfortunately the 'martingale revolution' seems to have by-passed him altogher. Not only he avoids probabilistic techniques and jargon in his treatment (this could be an intelligent choice), but he gives far too scant treatment to very important related concepts - such as the change of numeraire - which have very powerful practical applications and are coneptually very far reaching. Similalry, the treatment of interest rate models is far too centered on the 'traditional' approaches, to the detriment of a serious analysis of such approaches as the BGM (in this context, I found his dismissive commnents about his colleagues in poor taste). The book would have been very good in the early 90s. Finance has moved on too much, though, for such as weeping title as 'Derivatives' to be warranted today.

A good first book on the PDE approach to derivative pricing.

Wilmott's Derivatives is an accessible introduction to the partial differential equation (PDE) approach to mathematical finance.
The basis of mathematical finance is the observation by Black and Scholes that when pricing a derivative contract, for example a stock option, the randomness of the value of the underlying stock can be used to balance the randomness in value of the option in such a manner as to eliminate all randomness. A trader can thus by continually rebalancing his positions guarantee the price of an option. This price is the solution to the famous Black-Scholes equation. Thus the pricing of derivatives becomes a suprisingly rigourous branch of mathematics.
The Black-Scholes equation itself is not a particularly difficult equation -- indeed a few simple changes of variables transform it into the one-dimensional heat equation and a closed-form solution for the price of an option can be written down. The proof that it holds and the implications of the proof are however not so trivial and the book does well at explaining these.
Mathematical finance does not end with the Black-Scholes equation for two reasons. The first is that more and more complicated derivatives products are continually being innovated which require new mathematics to be invented. The second is that the equation is based on certain assumptions which while providing a reasonable first approximation are not perfect; the research of new more accurate models is therefore active and ongoing.
The author starts with the definitions of the basic financial instruments and gradually builds up to the Black-Scholes equation. He does so in a clear and detailed manner. He then goes on to discuss various generalizations to exotic options and more complicated models of stock price movements.
The principal defect of the book is that mathematical finance is not a branch of PDE theory or applied mathematics but rather a branch of probability theory. The probabilistic aspects of the subject are skimped on with only a brief coverage of binomial trees, and the concept of an equivalent martingale measure which is the fundamental concept of mathematical finance not discussed. Interest-rate options and many exotic stock options are more easily priced both practically and conceptually from a probabilitistic point of view and the PDE approach to them can become contrived.
To summarize, this book is worth buying but the reader should treat its contents with a pinch of salt and concentrate on the first two hundred pages. It should be read in parallel with another book, such as Baxter and Rennie, which concentrates on the probabilistic approach to the subject.

The Mother of All Derivatives Books

I spent a fortune out of my meager salaries, buying derivatives and financial engineering books for the past 5 years. This book could replace all of them and more. I wish I had known about this book before.
I recommend this book to anyone who is a serious student of derivatives.
