From best-selling Hawaiian author, Kiana Davenport, comes HOUSE OF SKIN, her first collection of prize-winning stories, including The O. Henry Awards, The Pushcart Prize, and The Best American Short Stories of 2000 (selected by E.L.Doctorow.)
These are provocative, often shocking, tales of obsession, love, racism, addiction, betrayal, even murder, but told in such sensuous, richly-textured prose each story is rendered magical and timeless.
A young girl obsessed with her tattooed, Yakuza uncle wit-nesses his horrific ending. A woman is condemned to death for loving a man outside her culture. Two cousins learn the terrible toll of drug addiction. A boy with amputated legs is introduced to love by an older woman.
A girl of mixed-race heritage discovers her white father's racist background, and spends her life trying to 'run her genes off, like fat.' Two beautiful sisters, professional taxi-dancers, abandon their daughters, leaving them with no clues or codes on how to survive. A house of dysfunctional and wounded people are finally redeemed by the strength of love.
The stories are set in islands across the Pacific where the author has lived and traveled extensively - Hawaii, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Fiji, Vanuatu - parts of of the world only barely ex-plored in contemporary literature. Davenport offers her readers not just mesmerizing writing, but also brings them bulletins from an ancient, yet seemingly brave, new world.
*****
Of Davenport's writing, ALICE WALKER has said, "She ex-hibits the character great writers must have, passionate love of people, dedication to the memory of people who have suffered. You can't read Kiana Davenport without being transformed."
ISABEL ALLENDE has said, "Reading Davenport is an over-whelming experience. Her prose is sharp and shining as a sword, yet her sense of poetry and love of nature permeate each line."
A Sampling of Reviews of Stories in this Collection:
"The story, HOUSE OF SKIN, transcends the very good and achieves the beautiful. It describes what is essentially a love story between the uncle, aunt and niece. After the tattooed uncle finally dies comes an ending as appropriate and mortifying as any I have ever read."
- W.P. Osborn, Manoa, Journal of International Writing
"THE LIPSTICK TREE had a magical effect on me. The pro-tagonist's dream of a better life, and her determination to go to the furthest extremes to achieve it, is heroic. The price of freedom is mitigated with grievous loss and bittersweet victory."
- Thom Jones, author of Pugilist at Rest
"DRAGON SEED is a spooky tale of addiction and self-destruction."
- Jeff Yang, Reviewer, The Village Voice
"The haunting, junkie ecstasy of Davenport's DRAGON SEED
is both abhorrent and beautiful."
- Jessica Hagedorn, author of Dog Eaters
"Hypnotic and amazing tales. Her writing is astonishing. Along the way, we learn about important and under-represented cultures. BONES OF THE INNER EAR still haunts me, and I believe some of these stories will stand as long as there is written language."
- Tillie Olsen, author of Silences, Tell Me a Riddle

A Never-Before Experience
By Chinmay Hota
When the narrator in one of the stories says, "...recognizing who you are isn't the subtext of a life. It's the main point," she is in fact voicing the main concern of the protagonists of all the other stories placed in this collection. All characterss are obsessed with the discovery of their true identities. These characters belong to, or do not belong to the many cultures they are destined to inhabit-- cultures as different as can be. They turn and toss as they come to terms with the rejections and the constant reminders of their half-caste status, till they decide on their spiritual mooring.
Search for identity, although the dominant one, is not the only thread that knits these stories. There are other recurring themes like addiction, love, racism, mother-daughter relationship, magical powers and so on.
The eponymous "House of Skin" exudes a strange, timeless, enchanting atmosphere as the plot about a complicated bond between three characters unfolds. Uncle Hiro with his bizarre body tattoo and mystical ways both attracts and repels his beloved wife Rachel. Hiro was a colorful character in more senses than one--he was a Samurai, a Yakuza and also showed lama like qualities all at once. He kept on disappearing from her for long periods, but never let the passion for her diminish a bit. "Perhaps their love was so intense his absence was how they kept from killing each other. He casts his charm on the young niece of Rachel and the narrator of the story, even when she was a young girl. The charm does not wear off even after she finds new lovers, goes through many marriages and divorces. The story ends very symbolically: the lively character of Hiro folding up as mysterious imagery, bemoaned by his two lovers. The conclusion is abstract, yet the reader cannot escape its powerful resonance.
"War Doll Hotel" tells the poignant story of a bunch of `glamorous refugees' in New York City, residing in the YWCA hostel near the famous Waldorf Hotel (pronounced `War Doll' by two of the `rag dolls'), as they waited for "green cards, a husband, a job, degrees". Three of them gel well--the narrator, a wannabe novelist; Sindiwa, South African journalist and Meena from New Delhi, with ambitions to fight for women's cause in India after getting her law degree. They meet years later, after realizing their respective career ambitions and going through marriages and divorces. Shuffling through the snapshots of their past they realize that "the more we imitated New York, the more we lost the privilege of our uniqueness." A nice story of self-discovery.
In "The Lipstick Tree" Eva fights cultural rejection in her own ways, as her family places expectations on her. "Demon Seed" is powerful and provocative.
These stories set in islands across the Pacific, are different in their milieu, approach and treatment. Kiana's evocative prose makes reading these exotic tales a unique experience.

House of Skin is a Must-Read
By Honi Aumiller
These stories--set in Hawai'i, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Nauru, and Vanuatu-- transported me to each of these exotic, tropical locales. The settings are characters as much as the passionate characters themselves. Kiana Davenport's vivid language and descriptions allow the reader to glimpse a foreign world that is seldom written about by American writers. Ms. Davenport--a Hawai'i native --surely must have traveled to these other places in order to render her stories so vivid, beautiful, and riveting. Many of these stories deal with a young female protagonist in search of her identity, trying to figure out how a Polynesian can assimilate into white society without losing her ancestral ties. In the process of reading these tales, I learned fascinating details about the cultures and societies of these lands. I am a huge fan of this writer--who has received many accolades and written several best sellers. Her books Song of the Exile and House of Many Gods are among my favorites. I am eager for Ms. Davenport's newest novel.

STUNNED BY THE POWER OF THESE STORIES
By Becky Young
"I am stunned by the power of these stories. They are so visceral the intensity knocked me over. Each story represents something on such a deep and immediate level, the reader gets to the heart of the matter and absolutely wants to go on to the next one. They are so strong and consistent in their message. There is such a wealth of personal and historic information about the Pacific islands behind them that Davenport takes the reader on an amazingly unique journey.
"The story HOUSE OF SKIN absolutely shocked me , it was so compelling, and of course it made the book's cover even more powerful. I cried while reading THE LIPSTICK TREE and DRAGON SEED. They are so REAL. These beautiful stories will haunt me for a long time. I congratulate Kiana Davenport and recommend this book to everyone."
